one-button remote control

The simplification of operational controls is a dominant theme in ergonomic design utility: The following example of one-bit control is examined in answer to the perenniel challenge

VCR-TV-DVD:

Allowing a single button to respond to three timing touches, and two depth-of-strokes:
  1. the bounce, 0.0-0.2 sec. - a quick precise touch to stop (and restart) or slow the VCR toward PLAY and LOOK modes
  2. the depress, 0.2-0.6 sec. - a more considered touch to speed-up (and change direction of) the VCR to SCAN and BACK modes
  3. the press or pounce, 0.6 sec. min. - a hold-down to reset, clear, sweep, skip processes (and change direction of) the VCR to SKIP and WIND modes

    And levels of touch:

  4. light-press - to actuate sound, electronic adjustments
  5. deep-press - to actuate video, mechanical adjustments
We can operate a VCR simply in modes: (a flow-diagram helps)
    PLAY - when playing forward
  1. deep-bounce - stops, pauses to LOOK
  2. deep-depress - speeds-up to SCAN
  3. deep-press - fast-forward spins-up to SKIP
  4. light - REF volume control
    LOOK - when stopped, paused
  1. deep-bounce - starts forward to PLAY
  2. deep-depress - starts speed-up to SCAN
  3. deep-press - fast-forward spins-up to SKIP
  4. light - REF mode control
SCAN - when fast-playing, speeding forward
  1. deep-bounce - slows-down to PLAY
  2. deep-depress - halts and re-speeds-up to [scan] BACK
  3. deep-press - fast-forward spins-up to SKIP
  4. light - REF volume if sound exists, else mode control
BACK - when fast-reverse-playing, speeding backward
  1. deep-bounce - stops, pauses to LOOK
  2. deep-depress - halts and re-speeds-up forward to SCAN
  3. deep-press - fast-forward spins-up to SKIP
  4. light - REF volume if sound exists, else mode control
    SKIP - when fast-forwarding
  1. deep-bounce - slows-down to speed-forward SCAN
  2. deep-depress - halts and re-speeds-up to [scan] BACK
  3. deep-press - halts and fast-rewind spins-up to WIND
  4. light - REF mode control
    WIND - when fast-rewinding
  1. deep-bounce - slows-down to speed-reverse [scan] BACK
  2. deep-depress - halts and re-speeds-up forward to SCAN
  3. deep-press - halts and fast-forward spins-up to SKIP
  4. light - REF mode control
A VCR loaded at home should auto-start to PLAY after 5 sec.
A VCR loaded midway should auto-pause and LOOK.

A SKIP to end should there STOP.
A WIND to home should there auto-EJECT after 5 sec.
A LOOK, after 5 sec., should auto-STOP.

    STOP - when already stopped
  1. deep-bounce - restores it to LOOK
  2. deep-depress - switches to auto-cycle SCAN modes [see below]
  3. deep-press - switches to auto-cycle MODE selection [see below]
  4. light - REF mode control
The manual-eject button should be recessed on the VCR chassis itself, not on the remote.

The flow-structure for volume control uses the light-touch alone for:

LOUD - when playing at a certain volume
  1. light-bounce - drops volume to MUTE
  2. light-depress - diminishes to half-volume
  3. light-press - increases volume more
  4. deep - REF play controls
MUTE - when quieted from a certain volume
  1. light-bounce - restores volume to LOUD
  2. light-depress - increases to half-volume
  3. light-press - increases volume more
  4. deep - REF play controls
The flow-structure for TV SCAN and MODE selection should be similar:
PLAY - when playing the TV alone
  1. deep-bounce - switches to LOOK
  2. deep-depress - switches to SCAN modes
  3. deep-press - switches to MODE selection
  4. light - REF volume controls
    LOOK - when quieted
  1. deep-bounce - switches to PLAY
  2. deep-depress - switches to SCAN modes
  3. deep-press - switches to MODE selection
  4. light - REF mode controls
SCAN - when auto-cycling through channels
  1. deep-bounce - switches to PLAY channel
  2. deep-depress - switches to [scan] BACK modes
  3. deep-press - switches to MODE selection
  4. light - REF (tbd: eg. volume with scan)
BACK - when auto-cycling through channels
  1. deep-bounce - switches to PLAY channel [alt/to MUTE]
  2. deep-depress - switches to [forward] SCAN modes
  3. deep-press - switches to MODE selection
  4. light - REF (tbd: eg. volume with scan-back)
MODE - when [auto-cycling] selecting modes
  1. deep-bounce - switches to [forward] SCAN modes
  2. deep-depress - switches to next MODE
  3. deep-press - switches to OFF
  4. light - REF (tbd: eg. audible assistance with mode)
SCAN loop includes: MODE loop includes: [and may be further improved]
