one-button remote control
The simplification of operational controls is a dominant theme in ergonomic design utility: The following example of one-bit control is examined in answer to the perenniel challenge |
VCR-TV-DVD:
Allowing a single button to respond to three timing touches,
and two depth-of-strokes:
- the bounce, 0.0-0.2 sec. - a quick precise touch to stop
(and restart) or slow the VCR toward PLAY and LOOK modes
- the depress, 0.2-0.6 sec. - a more considered touch to
speed-up (and change direction of) the VCR to SCAN and BACK modes
- the press or pounce, 0.6 sec. min. - a hold-down to reset,
clear, sweep, skip processes (and change direction of) the VCR
to SKIP and WIND modes
And levels of touch:
- light-press - to actuate sound, electronic adjustments
- deep-press - to actuate video, mechanical adjustments
We can operate a VCR simply in modes: (a flow-diagram helps)
PLAY - when playing forward
- deep-bounce - stops, pauses to LOOK
- deep-depress - speeds-up to SCAN
- deep-press - fast-forward spins-up to SKIP
- light - REF volume control
LOOK - when stopped, paused
- deep-bounce - starts forward to PLAY
- deep-depress - starts speed-up to SCAN
- deep-press - fast-forward spins-up to SKIP
- light - REF mode control
SCAN - when fast-playing, speeding forward
- deep-bounce - slows-down to PLAY
- deep-depress - halts and re-speeds-up to [scan] BACK
- deep-press - fast-forward spins-up to SKIP
- light - REF volume if sound exists, else mode control
BACK - when fast-reverse-playing, speeding backward
- deep-bounce - stops, pauses to LOOK
- deep-depress - halts and re-speeds-up forward to SCAN
- deep-press - fast-forward spins-up to SKIP
- light - REF volume if sound exists, else mode control
SKIP - when fast-forwarding
- deep-bounce - slows-down to speed-forward SCAN
- deep-depress - halts and re-speeds-up to [scan] BACK
- deep-press - halts and fast-rewind spins-up to WIND
- light - REF mode control
WIND - when fast-rewinding
- deep-bounce - slows-down to speed-reverse [scan] BACK
- deep-depress - halts and re-speeds-up forward to SCAN
- deep-press - halts and fast-forward spins-up to SKIP
- light - REF mode control
A VCR loaded at home should auto-start to PLAY after 5 sec.
A VCR loaded midway should auto-pause and LOOK.
A SKIP to end should there STOP.
A WIND to home should there auto-EJECT after 5 sec.
A LOOK, after 5 sec., should auto-STOP.
STOP - when already stopped
- deep-bounce - restores it to LOOK
- deep-depress - switches to auto-cycle SCAN modes [see below]
- deep-press - switches to auto-cycle MODE selection [see below]
- light - REF mode control
The manual-eject button should be recessed on the VCR chassis itself, not on the remote.
The flow-structure for volume control uses the light-touch alone for:
LOUD - when playing at a certain volume
- light-bounce - drops volume to MUTE
- light-depress - diminishes to half-volume
- light-press - increases volume more
- deep - REF play controls
MUTE - when quieted from a certain volume
- light-bounce - restores volume to LOUD
- light-depress - increases to half-volume
- light-press - increases volume more
- deep - REF play controls
The flow-structure for TV SCAN and MODE selection should be similar:
PLAY - when playing the TV alone
- deep-bounce - switches to LOOK
- deep-depress - switches to SCAN modes
- deep-press - switches to MODE selection
- light - REF volume controls
LOOK - when quieted
- deep-bounce - switches to PLAY
- deep-depress - switches to SCAN modes
- deep-press - switches to MODE selection
- light - REF mode controls
SCAN - when auto-cycling through channels
- deep-bounce - switches to PLAY channel
- deep-depress - switches to [scan] BACK modes
- deep-press - switches to MODE selection
- light - REF (tbd: eg. volume with scan)
BACK - when auto-cycling through channels
- deep-bounce - switches to PLAY channel [alt/to MUTE]
- deep-depress - switches to [forward] SCAN modes
- deep-press - switches to MODE selection
- light - REF (tbd: eg. volume with scan-back)
MODE - when [auto-cycling] selecting modes
- deep-bounce - switches to [forward] SCAN modes
- deep-depress - switches to next MODE
- deep-press - switches to OFF
- light - REF (tbd: eg. audible assistance with mode)
SCAN loop includes:
- original, delete
- TV Plan next channels
- off, previous
MODE loop includes:
- off, delete, add,
- VCR, Program, TV Plan, All, external inputs,
- CRT adjustments, ...
[and may be further improved]
PC Click-stick:
For explaining studio-quality large-screen, time-scaled 3-D cartoons by PC:
(Eg. an outerspace Hotel)
The Clickstick actuates, freezes, expands, enters, grabs, eg.
- tap on the background, steadies the cosmic frame;
- tap on an orbit, rescales orbit-speed to teach-time;
- tap on the hotel, gives an hotel-centric view;
- hold, expands, slows its spin;
- click a window, enters;
- a sign, jumps;
- a rim drags-turns;
- tap the space-elevator, actuates its car-course-cycle, recondensing to show it relative to its base orbiting Earth;…
Each item has preconfigured viewings manipulated by tap, hold, click.
