Professors' Spring Returns

an advanced space sciences romantic adventure comedy, PG-13 Sci4fi feature

Mr. Raymond Kenneth Petry, Strategic Director
a Wision--SesQuaTercet USA production

Four research professors took the ultimate Spring Break
and, now back home, they can't take being space aliens.

(a division of Lanthus Corporation)

[index][script][music][sets&settings][budget][prospectus][roles]
[feature] Four university tenure-track researchers returned to Earth by UFO on Monday, are now professors and finding society subtly space-alien,- so they're retracing their steps to the infinite outercosmos, -with a newly extant sister,- hopping the fence at an obsolete navy yard late one night and taking the old submarine moored to the dock before it's demolished: and again it's so modern, that one vehicle leading to another, they explain their way right back out of this cosmos ... This time forever. An astronomical linguistical mathematical systematical exploration turning the universe inside-out, as you never learned in the common universities.
[Music specified in this screenplay is the Strategic Director's selection]

(facts)
Mr. George, a senior citizen, and Miss Day, the banker's daughter, were rescued this morning from the Nevada Senior Investment Trust Association Bank vault that had shut and sealed with its circuits shorted for 3 days since the high-pressure U-F-O landing triggered its explosion-detection mechanism while they accessed Mr. George's safe-deposit box. Their whereabouts were discovered only yesterday, And we will show their exit momentarily after the Army Extraction-team crew worked on the door all night using high-powered diamond-tipped drills to get into the door's control box.

INT. BANK VAULT ANTEROOM - (DTV NEWS FILE)
US Army EXTRACTION TEAM drills with gear and diagrams; Bank Personnel, Police Officers, Ambulance Paramedics, watch ad lib; and an impressionable young BOY, BANK OWNER Mr. Day, and KRWN-TV SCENE-REPORTER:
SCENE-REPORTER
(tight)
We're inside the vault anteroom of N-SITA Bank, where Army Extraction experts have been working all night to get into the door's control core shutdown since its circuits shorted and closed in Sunday's U-FO event.
Bank Owner turns from watching, and comes away;
SCENE-REPORTER
(directed to look)
Here comes the bank's owner, Mr. Day.
(loud to Mr. Day)
Mr. Day!
BANK OWNER
(anticipates)
They're almost through: They're breaking into the control core presently.
BOY
(stereotype loud)
Why didn't they just dynamite, the door?!
BANK OWNER
(more to boy)
Wouldn't work: This vault was made by De-Guerre Vault Manufacturer, to withstand every sort of blast, from militants to nukes,-- even space-aliens, as we advertised,-- but we never really expected we'd meet, space-aliens.
SCENE IMAGING UPGRADES to HDTV-camera connection.
BANK OWNER
(details)
The door is made of several layers: The outer is a centimeter of rolled homogeneous armor steel; Behind it, is a soft-fill of ceramic balls and nitro-palm, backed by 5 centimeters of hard-spring steel. The strongest blast possible, contact-explosive, if used on this door, could rupture the outer layer, but the explosion would entropize as ceramic balls spread the force and crush; and the nitro-palm spews-out and ignites: It'd be a fiery mess for invaders.
BOY
(impressed)
The ceramic balls would shoot them!
BANK OWNER
Ahhh: No,-- not with enough force. But those balls would roll around the floor,-- and with the burning nitro-palm, the invaders would have a very tough time getting into the next level.
(grins)
BOY
(impressed for the door)
Wow! That'd make a neat video game!
SCENE-REPORTER
Are you sure who's-ever in there has survived?
BANK OWNER
Fairly certain: The interior is air-conditioned with moisture-and carbon-dioxide-scrubbers:- the two biggest threats to documents make carbolic acid which eats old paper. It's tough to survive 3 days in the vault,- but if they didn't exercise or use-up oxygen …
(a pensive beat)
The door closed on them during the moment of extraordinary atmospheric pressure: They may actually have three times as much air as we have: This door has excellent triple-wiped seals.
ZOOM-IN-PIP News-Anchor Jane, back on to Vault left, clear;
SCENE-REPORTER
Who, is, in there? Any clues yet?
BANK OWNER
(somber)
We've identified two mostly likely: My daughter, and Mr. George:-- He's a senior patron. My daughter was to have gone to Reno that evening with one of her college mates but in the melee her friend neglected to call me until yesterday afternoon; She apologized saying she thought she'd gone ahead. Mr. George, was in the bank that afternoon, --we confirmed him on video and contacted everyone who was here: We're the "Seniors-service-first" bank: That's our raison-d'etre!… We learned that Mr. George was missed by his neighbors, -but he's been reclusive since his wife Bertha passed-away a year ago; And everyone else has been seen or accounted-for.… We're supposing the explosion-detectors automatically closed the vault door on them when the U-F-O landed and no-one noticed its siren above the building exit alarms,- as everyone rushed out, thinking the building had blown-up!
(00:00 "hey-ey-ey" - What's Going On/DJ Miko)
BANK OWNER
And the voice-circuit shorted in the Statewide power outage surge-transients, and the siren's back-up battery drained after several hours,- which we didn't recognize when we got back inside much later. And when the siren triggered as the power was restored, we didn't realize that meant someone was inside, and we called the vault field-maintenance guys, only.
FRAME HEADER: Computer-database image-filing stats;
BOY
(urges more)
What if space-aliens, laser-blasted, the vault?!
BANK OWNER (CU)
(confides to Boy)
Well,- We're also one of twelve repositories in the world, for perfect counterfeit U.S.A. Treasury money: If space aliens did break into our bank, to get authentic U.S. money, to buy accoutrements, they wouldn't know which was real, and which was not: It's perfect, with all the threads, colors, inks, watermarks, chemtags, microprint,…
SCENE-REPORTER
(slightly worried)
How would we, know the difference?
BANK OWNER
You wouldn't: It's worn, but it's never distributed. The government has special detector equipments for rapidly tracing this counterfeit money: It has special differences you can't know: Imperfections which all paper money has, thread placements which are meaningless otherwise; It's registered like real money: Can't detect that.
BOY
(impressed)
It can be spent like real money!?- How much perfect counterfeit money do you have?!
BANK OWNER
(to boy)
About ten million dollars, spread throughout the vault.
SCENE-REPORTER
(worried)
How can you, tell it apart?
Liminal news-desk/camera-work LINGO spices-up the AUDIO;
BANK OWNER
Again: It's all accounted-for, and the owners are government special agents who live in the area: They have regular jobs, --some may be seniors,-- and they have special duties to attend their assets: We don't even know who they are.
BOY
(impressed)
Wow!- I'm going to be a special agent when I grow-up!
The drilling ceases; the Army Team reviews diagrams--
EXTRACTION TEAM
(bemused playful)
/1/ Do we cross the blue wires, or the red, today?
/2/ Well, We started yesterday, and that was Tuesday;-- that's 1-mod-2.
/3/ That's important only if you're playing Peas-Beans and you'll see me Tuesday and call me, Friday.
/2/ Ah, yeah: This ain't no science fiction story here.
(sobering)
/1/ Blue wire: my favorite color …
/3/ Cut, the, blue: It's only nitro-palm, not dynamite.
BANK OWNER
I think, they're into the control core;-- excuse me.
(goes to the Army Team)
Scene-Reporter CLOSES TOWARD the vault …

Quiet again, the Door swings slowly open,-- revealing …
SCENE-REPORTER

SCENE-REPORTER
Here they come: They are smiling…!-
(CLOSER IN, elates)
They're beaming with gratitude!- They are really happy to see us!

MR. GEORGE
(re-feels)
At first I thought it was a heart attack: I braced myself for the worst …
(a beat)
But, I felt all right,- and Miss Day said there was some kind of explosion forcing the door shut, and the timeout would not let us out for an hour.
(a beat, eerier)
Then, the night passed, and a day, And we were afraid Nevada had been hit by a nuclear I-C-B-M and there would be nothing to go outside for … Miss Day is a part-time nurse at the college, you know: She's a good chaperone, too.… Then, after 2 days we heard grinding at the door, And we knew it was the rescue team.
(upbeat)
I'm ready to go home, take a shower, and watch T-V!
(grins)
SCENE-REPORTER
We're sorry to hear about the passing of your wife: This must all be a big bother to you.
MR. GEORGE
(re-feels)
Bertha, was a good woman! But she couldn't stay: The world did not rest easy in her shoes: She was really proud of our grandson Michael, when he graduated summa cum laude; --he's now a professor of astronomy in California;-- But, modern technology was too much for her: She wanted more: She wanted: 3-D video-headgear for live-visits on the Internet with his family:-- Bertha wanted … The dance-of-life!
(beat)
The last thing she told me,--
(sniffles, getting heavy)
She said: George: They're almost here: Maybe a year, maybe two: You may get to meet them, George,-- she said.
(heaves-in, out; heavy)
I'm ready to go home; take a shower; and watch T-V.

NOAA METEOROLOGIST
(pointing)
First, our GOES-west CONUS weather satellite computer sounded a storm-alert and we noted a ring of storms around the Earth;-- We deduced that if this had an external cause there should be a center of pressure …
(points)
Here, Nevada, which was also under the moon: We postulated a planetary nursery cloud focused by the moon's gravity had broadsided the Earth … but subsequent atmospheric spectral obscuration analyses proved null …. When we finally prompted NASA for a telescopy response, we learned they were tracking something incoming on radar, but they didn't know what ….
(pointing)
They tracked it moving toward Earth at an incredible speed of a million meters per hesit, which is the kind of speed we see in solar flares but it was not in the sun's direction;- And that's where we stand:-- Except the coincidental appearance of the U-F-O landing in Area 51, there's no evidence connecting the events: You know as much as we know!
SCENE-REPORTER
Could there have been a space chase? -Maybe a space hunter was blasting at the U-FO;- Maybe that's why it had to land on Earth.…
NOAA METEOROLOGIST

ATA-MISSILE-VIDEO of UFO; machine GROWLS,--
CAPTAIN
The growl you hear is the A-T-A locking-on target;
(a beat)
Then in the next scene, missiles are launched on pilot command; But the flack-response from the U-FO quickly removes the ATA;
VIDEO BLANKS,-- SECOND LAUNCH-- BLANKS,-- THIRD;
CAPTAIN
After 3 launches the black-box shuts-down:
(a beat)
The F-22 was apparently detected as a threat and potential source of the ATA's;-- the pilots ejected:
(a beat)
All three pilots survived the ordeal: We can talk with them.
A HELMET-VIDEO in an F-22 fast-crash-descent … ejection;--
CAPTAIN
You can see from the helmet camera on this pilot that the F-22 went down quickly: apparently deflected by additional U-FO flack.
AGM MISSILE-VIDEO of UFO … till blankout;--
CAPTAIN
This missile-nose view is available on the A-G-M-62 Walleye, And again you can see it gets only halfway to the U-FO, before its transmission terminated.
REPLAY same missile-video at SLOW-speed;--
CAPTAIN
When we replay this in slow motion, we see the flack emanates from around the snout of the U-FO, but just before the flack hits there is a burst of laser-light we think, which blinds the camera …
VIDEO FLASH-BLANKS,--
CAPTAIN
There! And for the last remaining half-second the transmission is only guidance telemetry.
(a beat)
The Rockwell A-G-M-1-30-A with its M-K-84 warhead, fared no better …. We use the A-G-M's because the U-FO is a big slow target -cumbersome, is a better word: They're fast, but not agile;- We also have the Hughes Maverick A-G-M-65-B-A's, which are TV-guided.

TV-REPORTER
(steady pace)
Could these other shapes be shuttle crafts kept inside the mother-ship?
UFOLOGIST
Mother-ship? I don't think this is, the mother-ship: This is huge, but it's built for space travel, not transport:- Initial reports from the Army tell us there's not much room onboard for passengers:-- a thousand, not ten thousand,- Nor extra shuttles: This is a warrior craft, but not, the mother-ship.
TV-REPORTER

UFOLOGIST
(clips)
Yes:
(points to book images)
These could be shuttles from the mother-ship;- but, Where is the mother-ship?- We don't know!
TV-REPORTER
Where do these U-FOs come from?
UFOLOGIST
(to star-map)
Prime territory is the Pleiades Six Sisters cluster-constellation: The literature includes Indian stories with sufficient detail to indict the Sisters in most cases; However, the Pleiadeans have most probably conquered galactic interstellar space and this ship could have come from any direction: Most likely it came from a planet around a nearby star:- Astronomers have found many good candidates.
TV-REPORTER
How do the aliens escape detection?
UFOLOGIST
The U-F-O?- It's stealth-technology from stem-to-stern: But we're catching-up!
TV-REPORTER
(repeats)
How do the space aliens disguise themselves to pass as tourists?
UFOLOGIST
Ah!- They probably have the same number of legs as we have; probably walk upright; two arms; their heads may be misshapen, but that can be disguised; Maybe they stole clothes to hide their other defects.
TV-REPORTER
Are we in danger of species-alienation? Sexual-contact with mankind-like space aliens?
UFOLOGIST
(refutes)
Nawh,- That's movie-hype: In the animal kingdom there's real mating only by homogenetic species: If they are mankind, you get mankind offspring; Rarely do species or their genera develop mules; And mules do not mate successfully:-- that's why they're called, mules. And if you're worried about mule-clones being used as expendable warriors, Don't believe any old-wives' succubae tales: They are probably castrated male-mules, to heighten their attack skills; Women should carry a gun in their purse, and an extra condom; should be safe enough.- The big danger is if they deposit saplings in our bodies.…

PETER
(loud as to Gwen)
How's it been for you?- Focusing on your lectures?- Avoiding questions about space aliens in the desert?
GWEN (OS)
It's okay.
PETER
Anyone discover your glow-in-the-dark speckles?
GWEN (OS)
(glowers)
No,-- I've been going to bed before dark.
PETER
(pretend-examines a hand)
Strange stuff,-- keeps glowing days and weeks;-- Makes me feel spacey, on Earth.… Seen Dan yet?
Gwen enters with a plate of a dozen date-'n'-nut-butter-layered-corn-cake corner-cut-sandwiches and napkins,--
GWEN
(nearing)
No;-- He called: Said he'd come-by early today, "semi-maybe".
(offers plate)
Have a date-'n'-nut-butter fault.
(eats one)
PETER
(sits-up, takes two)
Thanks.… I'm worried about Harry: We shouldn't have left him up there.
(eats)
GWEN
(amid eats)
He can find his way home.
PETER
(amid eats)
He's not as navigation-skills oriented as you, Gwen;-- and those SafeGuard missiles were no toys.
GWEN
He learns very fast,-- especially when he's confronted by big game maneuvers: He got that hole-shuttle going, in less than two minutes.
PETER
Mmm,-- and wouldn't come back until he scored:- But what's the score with him?
GWEN
(sits mid-sofa)
He felt there was something inadequate to coming-back;-- Wasn't sure what it was: just his feeling.
PETER
(hesitates)
How … Gwen … Did he tell you that?!
GWEN
(amid eats)
Yes.
PETER
(startles)
When?- While I was returning to the ring-city and galaxy-ship?
GWEN
Coming down the cosmic elevator.
PETER
(knowing smile)
Oh….
(contemplates a bite)
GWEN
And, he reminded me yesterday.
PETER
(rouses)
Yester-Whose-Day!? Gwen.
GWEN
After you stopped-by …. Then Dan called: He said there's something else I should know, too.
PETER
(exasperates)
I'm not following, Gwen: Date-'n'-nut-butter faults, are great, but not as fractal-logic elucidators….
GWEN
By communicator,- one from the galaxy ship…
Stifling as Kitchen back DOOR (OS) SLIDES OPEN … and SHUT.
FOOTSTEPS (OS) through the kitchen,--
Gwen's newly-extant college-hip smart sister DIANA (21-22, tall slender blue-eyed blond Germanic Swedish Amer. female supermodel), university Senior, concurrent chemistry grad student, Harry's fiancee, enters, eating,--
DIANA
Hi, Peter.
PETER
(mildly surprised smile)
Hello?
(quieter unto Gwen)
Who's your friend?
DIANA
(exasperates)
You, too, Peter!?-
(to Gwen)
How many more are there, of you?!
GWEN
Just the three of us;- You'll get used to it, Diana: The desert doesn't forget,-- It's just slow sometimes.
PETER
Help, Gwen: What's going on here?- Diana, who?
DIANA
(unamused)
I'm Gwen's "little" sister, Peter: You've known me for years: I'm grown-up, now, in the normal world.
PETER
Gwen: What did I miss?- You don't have a sister;-- A stepsister or someone,-- if I forgot?
GWEN
As it turns-out, I do have a sister, Peter.…
DIANA
(unimpressed)
Don't worry about it, Peter: I've figured out who you are, really:-- I know about your little glow-in-the-dark spots, too.
Surprising them both,--
PETER
(concerned unto Gwen)
What did you tell her, Gwen?!
DIANA
(asserts)
She didn't tell me: I guessed;- And shook hands with her: It rubs-off;- I keep one in a vase: It's cute.
Gwen, Peter, are more, surprised, mutually.
DANIEL (30-35, med. tall trim male model), Jewish, Democrat, understandable Bostonian, engineering professor, KNOCKS at the front door--
DANIEL
(through the screen)
Helloooo!
GWEN
(unto Daniel)
Come-on-in, Daniel.
DANIEL
(enters)
Hi, Gwen; Hi, Peter;
(checks Diana: smiles)
And, hello, cutie.
DIANA
(unamused)
Hello, Daniel.
Daniel is pleased to be recognized but doesn't know her.
PETER
Dan, now that you're here: What did you want to tell Gwen about Harry?
DANIEL
(elates)
He's here!
GWEN+PETER
(together)
He's what!?
(equally paced)
When, did-he, arrive/get-here?!
(and back)
How, did-he, get-here/arrive?!
DIANA
(distresses)
Oh, Lord,- It's an invasion! Gwen: You told me there were only three of you: Now there's four!?
GWEN
I didn't know Harry was here: He didn't go with us to the desert.
PETER
(checks)
Where, did he arrive?
DANIEL
That's the strange part: He's been here all the time: Never left town.
PETER
(calms 2 beats: muses)
That figures ….
DANIEL
(surprised)
Figures!?
PETER
(accelerates)
Dan: Meet Gwen's sister.
DANIEL
(smiles approval)
Hello?!
(unto Gwen)
You didn't tell me you had a cute sister, Gwen;-- Private school?
(takes sandwich, napkin)
DIANA
(inserts low-dour)
Do I have to do this again?!
(lingering thought)
GWEN
(helps, to Dan)
No: Undergraduate, Senior, with sufficient credits for graduation requirements: Diana is taking graduate courses concurrently but graduates with her Senior class, end of Spring.
DANIEL
Where? Here, at the U…?!
They all nod yes; Daniel puzzled, begins a bite;
DIANA
Daniel: Do you have glowing spots, too?
DANIEL
(hangs-bite, worries)
Nnngh!?
(but eats, slowly)
GWEN
She guessed, Dan;-- and, checked us out.
DIANA
Well, actually I knew something was wrong when you guys didn't return from the desert on-schedule: I'd had terrifying dreams about you, the night before the U-F-O landed:- I couldn't reach you behind the shining lights: And the next night, I dreamt Gwen walked through my room.… I was relieved when you guys got home: But, the night after, I dreamed some kind of boxy space-craft left swiftly, like a hyper-shot …. I woke up trembling.
DANIEL
(chewing)
Well … well … We're here now.… What does this have to do with Harry?
PETER
Gwen talked with Harry, yesterday, by communicator…
(adjusts)
Radio satellite network.
DANIEL
(worries)
Are you sure we should be talking about this in front of, Diana?
DIANA
It's okay by me: You-guys are some kind of angel, manifestations,- Right!?
(mystically)
Alien, plankton, life forms:- Replacements, for my-Gwen!?
(asserts)
I really appreciate what you are doing for me!
DANIEL
(chuckles)
Actually, We think we're quite normal.
(shifts gears)
O-kay.… You-guys put this little skit together to surprise me?!…
(forces)
Hah! Hah! Hah!
(to Diana)
But I've never had such a pretty woman so turned-on by my presence.
DIANA
(sits abruptly with Gwen)
I'm going with you-guys!
PETER
Where are we going?
DIANA
You're going back: aren't you?! You angels can't stay here forever: Can you?!
DANIEL
(curious)
Why are we going, anywhere?
PETER
Dan: Harry's still at the ring-city: Your campus-Harry is a double: He's not our Harry.
Daniel clears his throat, doubly astonished.
GWEN
Are you sure you can come with us, Diana?
DIANA
(wails, throw-hugs Gwen)
Don't leave me, alien-Gwen: You're all I have left of my-Gwen.
GWEN
(understands, hugs)
We must have come down on top of them: We couldn't see directly below us:
(sincere)
I'm sorry.
DIANA
(tears stop, leans-back)
I can go with you!?- Please!?
GWEN
(unto Peter)
She can take Harry's place.
PETER
Can you trust her, Gwen? She's not really your sister: You've only known her this week.
GWEN
(one-arm hug)
She is, -sort-of,- the sister I've always felt, I'd had:
(relates)
When I was a small child, Mom told me I was going to have a sister;-- I was excited, but, Years later I asked them, When, she was coming … And they were very sad and quiet;- We never spoke of it again; I know what it is, now,- but I don't want to lose her again: This world must have let her survive.
DANIEL
(agitates)
It's not so easily going to let us, survive: I checked the navy yard:- The submarine is back again but the place is busy; If they find bodies under the galaxy-ship, we may be tried for manslaughter …. Come to think of it, those three jets we downed …
PETER
(clips)
Then if we're going, we go tonight!
The kitchen TELEPHONE RINGS (OS),-- Gwen retreats for it,
GWEN
How are you going to get us out of here, Peter? The galaxy-ship is overrun with U-F-O enthusiasts armed to their metal-detectors with U.S. military might.
DANIEL
The submarine, might be the easiest choice: the fewest challenges; The least presumptuous.
(grins)
GWEN (OS)
(answers telephone)
Hello?!
(self-identifies)
Yes.
(CONCURRENT)
(ad lib admissives)
Yes … yes … yes … we did … yes …
PETER
(gathers service, exiting)
Take two Occam's razors, Dan, -that we may be counted among the physicists,- And, Let's go!
DANIEL
(funny-grins)
What's wrong with being a physicist?! …
(confides to Diana)
Your Physics T-A's say, the Creator is on the side of the physicists.…
DIANA
(tart)
Really!?
DANIEL
They say, He fashioned matter with zero I-Q, to give physicists half a chance.
(grins)
DIANA
(penetrates 2 beats)
And, Do they know which, half?!
Daniel chuckles. HDTV SOUND DISTINCT, They eat and watch:
[NEWS-ANCHOR JANE]
…now been confirmed that this U-F-O is, unoccupied, but the campground was occupied at the time the U-F-O landed, Sunday afternoon; Nevada Sheriffs' Department has broadcast All-States Bulletins on three good leads, and we may have the space-aliens by the weekend!…
(begin KRWN music interlude)
[NEWS-ANCHOR JANE](CONCURRENT)
Royal Kroown TV Channel 3, Nevada, will keep you informed as events are unfolded.
GWEN (OS)
(finishes louder)
… yes … Tomorrow morning, 11 A-M … Yes … Thank you … Good Bye.
(hangs-up, calls to all)
We go tonight, guys! The cab driver has informed the Nevada Sheriffs,- and our local Police Chief wants to interview us, tomorrow morning,-- school schedule not-withstanding!
FADE TO DARK
FADE IN:
INT. LIVINGROOM - LATE EVENING, SINGLE LAMP
Front door closed; PASSING HEADLIGHTS illumine the drapes; HDTV plays a movie with KRWN News PIP; DVCAM atop ACTUALLY RECORDS this scene [REF Fling03]. On the floor are 4 black packs, 4 black boom boxes, a baton; on the table, 2 galaxy communicators. Of the black-attired blacked-faces foursome, Gwen, Peter, wear their formal space-admiral suits black, collars up; identical watches; Diana models her own chic black outfit and watch; They sit around the table, pointing and discussing strewn diagrams;
Daniel, space-admiral suit white, locks the front door and approaches … fingers the lapel:-- his jacket dims to black;
DANIEL
Somebody might be monitoring us:-
(points to front)
The car parked across the street.
(sits)
GWEN
(to diagrams)
Why is this so hard: going-back, up?! It was so easy the first time out: We just ran and jumped, and walked and rode and flew.
DANIEL
(augments: moralizes)
And visited and turned-back.… Which suggests a moral: Obedience is easy learning as a child: But, Wisdom is difficult learning for adults,- as, Wisdom, retries your obedience to good, all over again.… I just hope there's not a next stage where learning becomes impossible ….
DIANA
You angels have this all worked out.
PETER
And you'll have to keep-up with us every step-and-turn of the way, as we improvise:-- Easy as skiing!
DIANA
Except that all this increases both potential and, kinetic energy:-
(snide)
Accelerating up-hill, is easier planned, than implemented!
DANIEL
(counts on fingers)
Really nothing to it, Diana:-- Same as before … This time, we: Run into trouble; Jump off the bandwagon; Walk on thin ice; Ride out the storm; And, fly off the bat ….
(grins)
I'm all ready,-- really.
PETER
Yeah: And then, we visit the iniquities, and turn back the clock.
DANIEL
(mock-seeks 6th finger)
Yeah: Forgot about six and seven: Ran out of fingers.
GWEN
(points in diagrams)
The specific challenges and obstacles we can expect, are, -as we recall:-
(prioritizes)
First, staying ahead of our interview with our Police Chief tomorrow morning. Tonight: Bypassing the demolitions team at the submarine,-- and the destroyers and jet squadrons in the bay,-- and the battleships at sea, tomorrow…. The next afternoon or evening, Riding-out the missile attacks, the DEW line A-B-M's over the horizon, the SafeGuard missiles in LEO, and trans-lunar orbit, --but at least we're riding-out: not riding-in.-- Then: Flying around probable alien traffic in the aether-slipstream; and more at the metal-ring-city …
(tacks)
And, What do you think we may meet at the cosmic elevator, Peter?
PETER
You left your code-lock on the control panel: Hopefully no-one, once we're inside the elevator. In the garden, and out in the desert beyond, may be super-cosmosians….
DANIEL
Finding a full refrigerator, On schedule:- If there are people eating out in the cosmos already, Might be empty!
PETER
We'll be wasting no time looking for refrigerators: We're better prepared, this time.
GWEN
Speaking of which: Harry said he's doing all right: He's found ample service supplies around the city; and tied into a cosmic information inter-plex: And he really doesn't want to come back to Earth.
DIANA
(quiets)
That reminds me,-- excuse me.
(exits to kitchen phone)
DANIEL
(over-thinks)
A'round, the ring-city: 25-million miles, a'round!
PETER
One taste of heaven: satisfies the soul, forever.… Anything he wants, from this world?- Might be similar, enough: A replacement jacket?
Diana TOUCH-TONES (OS) the kitchen telephone;
GWEN
No: He said, his "admiral" suit is amply warm;-- just very lonely: He really wants us, up there, Peter.
PETER
I think we've learned our lesson on that score, too.
DIANA (OS:CONCURRENT)
(quiet-tones to phone)
Harry: I've called to say, good-bye.
(listens)
Yes, remember?- I explained this possibility: Gwen's gone tonight.
(listens longer)
Yes: Love you always, Harry.
(listens)
"God be with you", too, Harry: Bye.
(listens, hangs-up)
GWEN
He did give me his communicator schedule: It takes about an hour,-- two kilohesits-- round-trip on our galaxy sector of his cosmo-net: a hundred times faster than our galaxy-ship travel: A reply message should be coming-in momentarily.
PETER
I hope Diana's parents can forgive her: We never got to tell our, folks!
DANIEL
(appends)
Nor friends and relatives!
GWEN
It's, Not being able to communicate with them,- that's going to seem wrong: She's of age, not dead.
DANIEL
(considers communicator)
I'll watch-after her, Pete: You and Gwen work together better.
Diana returns to the livingroom--
DIANA
(somber)
I'm finished,-- ready to go to heaven.
PETER
(looks at his watch)
Let's synchronize our watches: 12-point-5-50.
(holds it to Daniel)
Diana adjusts her own;
DANIEL
(holds his to Peter's)
So official.
(presses its button)
We'll tell you about, hesits, Diana.
(rechecks his time)
DIANA
(glums)
Think time amounts to much where we're going?
Gwen holds hers to Peter's, presses its button, checks it.
Her COMMUNICATOR TINKLES-IN,--
She touches its actuator:-- CRYPTO CONNECTION BLURTS,--
[GWEN-COMMUNICATED]
(TINKLE-TINKLE)
Harry, Do you want us to bring you a spare jacket? Your size!?
[HARRY-COMMUNICATED]
(TINKLE-TINKLE)
No need, Gwen: This "admiral" suit is amply warm, but so lonely:
(emotes)
Just wishing you were all here.
PETER
(to communicator)
We're expediting on this, Harry.
(pauses)
[GWEN-COMMUNICATED]
(TINKLE)
Anything you think we're forgetting, Harry?
[HARRY-COMMUNICATED]
(TINKLE)
No,-- Plan sounds like a "Go" …
(TINKLE-TINKLE)
Gwen: Is Diana really up, on this?
[GWEN-COMMUNICATED]
(TINKLE)
Yes: She's written her power-of-attorney deposition: signed and sealed for Mom's lawyers.
[HARRY-COMMUNICATED]
(TINKLE)
Really smart kid, there,-- I hope I like her.
[GWEN-COMMUNICATED]
(TINKLE)
We'll advise you of our progress in this decision.
[HARRY-COMMUNICATED]
(TINKLE)
You guys are really waiting for me to say, break!?
(football-heroic)
Okay! Let's do this! Keep in touch! Break!
DANIEL
(to communicator)
Soon enough, Harry: Just keep your cap-ten alive.
(pauses)
A blue POLICE-CAR BEACON flashes outside, into the window;
They all notice pensively-- and recheck mutually …
COMMUNICATOR FINAL-TINKLES-out its disconnection;--
(00:00 - Run Away/Real McCoy - mix-over drone)
They snatch-up communicators, papers, boxes, gear, baton;
And head-out the backyard way.
FADE TO:
EXT. OBSOLETE NAVY STATION, CALIFORNIA BAY - HIGH FULL MOON
COASTAL ROADWAY, TRAFFIC - FAR SHOULDER - (CONTINUOUS)
Huddled on this far side, Gwen, Peter, Daniel, Diana, now blackened-faces, await their opportunity to cross, …
The Road clears momentarily,--
And They dash across still-distant oncoming headlights …
Passed the closed guard station cracked with tall weeds …
Across the time-warped vacant parking strip … to
THE BARBWIRED FENCE
Peter hangs a folded sheet-metal-and-carpet piece atop--
PETER
(hoarse-whispers)
Hit the wall!
Each climbs over … and joins the huddle for reassurance,-- their black-greased -FACES- (CU) maybe military but Peter, Gwen, Daniel, faces, hands, also glow blue points …
Daniel last, takes and tosses the piece, catching-up,--
DANIEL
(confides)
Still faster than swimming the bay.
And all recede quickly into the MOVING SHADOWS scattered by the now-passing cars headlights …
But as FLOODLIGHTS BEGIN PRIMING over the dock …
FAR SHY OF DOCKSIDE
Regathered crouched scanning the lay of a low-profile bluish-black SUBMARINE … patting and pointing a route to avoid 4 DEMOLITION CREW preparing generators, lights, radio, tools, amid removed equipments and debris …
DANIEL
(hoarse-whispers)
That should be all of them!
PETER
(hoarse-whispers)
Five hesits;-- Go!
(00:00 past drum - Color Of Love/Amber/Berman 12" mix)
Daniel, Diana, quick stealth way around for center …
Peter, Gwen, waiting … check their watches … and mutually …
Place and start their boom boxes,-- and run for the dock;
POV: Crew, not noticing distant SIRENS [Police+MP] (OS) …
Startles at 20 TIRES SQUEALING (OS) TO STOP at the street …
And BARKING [dogs] (OS) … VOICES IN PURSUIT (OS);-- coming:
Dockward [Officer-D] (OS) PA-HORNS, "CLEAR SHOTS ONLY!"
Centerward [Voice-C] (OS) YELLS, "DOGS THIS WAY!"
Centerward CRACK-CRACK,-- dockward BANG-BANG: gunshots!
Centerward [Officer-C] (OS) PA-HORNS, "CLEAR YOUR SHOTS!"
Two Crew retreat, avoiding two dockward figures oncoming …
Centerward [Dogs, Officers, Voices] (OS) beyond the light, chase two more figures oncoming through the center …
The remaining two Crew back away, off into the water as dockward CRACK-CRACK-CRACK,-- centerward BANG-BANG-BANG!
Four figures loosely weaving, converge, up the gangplank …
ATOP THE SUBMARINE CONNING TOWER-MOUND
Lift the hatch,- and climb down into the dark: Peter, Gwen, Diana, Daniel last,-- shutting the hatch, wheeling …
As a centerward box reverts, booming a mathematics lecturer over squeaky chalk, "Remember to check boundary conditions; Then, par-X-par-Z dee-Z, plus par-X-par-W dee-W, along the curvilinear contour of inflection for the relation X on Z-W space…;" and remaining boxes append choirs, booming, Angels We Have Heard,… Gloria Deo,… Requiem,- to utter cacophony;
And the Crew returns running, climbing:
CREWMAN#1
(up the gangplank, loud)
They're, inside!
(tries the hatch wheel)
RADIOMAN (CONCURRENT)
(keys radio-phone, loud)
3-4,- Q-K,… This is Beaver.… Meadow Lark.… Over!?
CREWMAN#2
(late up gangplank, loud)
There were four of them!
(joins at conning mound)
CREWMAN#3
(gathering tools, loud)
Check the grounds for more!
(runs for the gangplank)
INT. CONNING TOWER - CLOSED QUIET DARK (AS CONTINUOUS)
Daniel ties his baton jam of the hatch-wheel-lock;
Outside ATTEMPTS to open it, JOSTLE IT;
DANIEL
(climbs down)
Next time it'll be my D-V-D's of rabbit squeals and Tibetan chants!
The second pair of FOOTSTEPS runs onto the outer hull.
LADDER BOTTOM
Peter on the floor, FLASHLIGHTS the way: Gwen, Diana, climb off clunkily onto the hollow floor littered with clear-red plastic-tank fire extinguishers, workmen debris, papers:
GWEN
(lands, passes)
I hope there are no crew in here.
PETER
(aims into control-room)
Gwen: Get this started-- and away from the dock.
DIANA
(lands, quips, passes)
Angels have more fun than blonds!
And on to the control room, as Daniel climbs down; and outside 3 pair FOOTSTEPS move equipment about the hull;
DIANA
(flashlights litter)
Find a light-switch and a trashcan.
Daniel clops a landing,- and flicks-on his flashlight.
Peter precedes, stepping over strewn workmen debris:--
DANIEL
(following)
Think someone knew we were coming!?
PETER
They just don't want us here while they're demolishing this.
THE SUBMARINE COMMAND CENTER:
Gwen seated busy at three adjacent wide displays, fingers flying, touching diagram-display points, pop-ups, keys that correspondingly light, chain-spelling; Diana watches …
DIANA
(slides into chair-right)
Way-out SPO, Gwen.
Daniel picks-up a half-full fire extinguisher.
Outside, a pair of FOOTSTEPS runs-off the hull;
RED RUNNING LIGHTS COME-ON.
Peter, Daniel, arrive--
PETER
(orders)
Gwen: Get us out of here, now:-- battery power;-- anything!
He flashlights the BUTTON on the wall above her:
DANIEL
(scrutinizes the button)
Where's the tape on your button?
PETER
That was the world we left, Dan:-- a prior chinga terra.
DIANA
(to them)
What's a chinga?
DANIEL
(shrugs)
Catholic meaning: Failure, censure, Get lost, a war cry…. A previously noted subtitle posted on our world.
Outside, a pair of FOOTSTEPS returns onto the hull;
Daniel shows the fire extinguisher to Diana,- sliding his hand into the back-sleeve of its flared tube--
DANIEL
(pretends levity)
And, This, is a giant spritzer,-
(mock-appraises)
Of fizzy cherry-cola-berry juice.
DIANA
(leans-looks into tank)
What fires do you suppose they were extinguishing in cherry-cola fizz?!
Outside TOOLS OPERATE on the hull,- a DRILL starts working;
DANIEL
(considers: looks about)
Maybe this place was ransacked, for something.
(dangles extinguisher)
PETER
How soon, Gwen?-
(to Daniel)
Dan: Be ready with your fire extinguisher.
Gwen touches a sequence on her center ENGINE-display …
MARKS, LINES, BAR-GRAMS, flashing, diagram operations;
GWEN
Watch the bar-grams.
Outside HARD BANGING on the hull;
A FAINT HUM begins increasing in the background;
Diana leans to Gwen's display--
DIANA
Is this easy, Gwen?
GWEN
It works.
DIANA
How much does it do for you?
GWEN
Single-point operation of the ship.
DIANA
(bouncy)
Neat: We can take a joy-ride!?-
(more quietly)
Will it really go?
Outside, a CIRCULAR SAW starts,-- GRINDS on the hull;
Bar-grams above the line, indicate Engines nominally ready.
GWEN
It's hot.…
She presses a sequence of key-spots on Eng-display--
BAR-GRAMS STAND UP;-- RIGHT DISPLAYS NAVIGATION: Diana's--
The ENGINES WHINE-UP in the background;--
The FLOOR ROLLS SLIGHTLY;-- Daniel, Peter, grab seat rails.
PETER
Forget the ropes, Gwen: Scram this!
DANIEL
(overrides)
Floor, it, Gwen!
(to Diana)
Hang-on tight, Diana.
(confides unto Peter)
Scram, would mean, Dump the reactor-core.…
THE SHIP SQUIRMS;
Outside TOOLS CEASE,--
3 pair heavy rapid FOOTSTEPS PASS-OFF the hull;
TWO ASTERISKS APPEAR on Nav-display, flashing far-left and far-right,- heading centerward;--
DANIEL
(points to the asterisks)
Gwen: They've already notified the coastguard!
PETER
Gwen: Break us free: Take the dock with us!
Gwen presses more keys and spots:--
THE SHIP LURCHES,-- the ROOM LEANS dockward; DEBRIS ROLLS;
Outside the DOCK CRASHES against the hull; The Room rights;
DANIEL
(exaggerates)
Good; good:- Take the whole west coast of California too…!
PETER
We should check all systems soon.
GWEN
All systems, nominal.
PETER
Does this submarine work the same as before?
GWEN
Yes, Peter:
(points)
Systems check appears here …
Outside GUNSHOTS PUNCH the conning tower-mound and hull,--
A KLAXON REVERBERATES briefly;--
Daniel, Peter, grab the rails two-handed harder.
Nav-display lower-center ship-mark alternates, an asterisk; NEXT-RIGHT DISPLAYS SHIP-INTEGRITY, DIAGRAM WARNINGS with asterisks flashing hull-hits, and LIBRARY DATA;--
GWEN
(glances across)
Hull-integrity warning!
PETER
(clips)
Hull penetration:- Dive!
Gwen keys: Eng slides left; Nav to center; Lib to Diana;
GWEN
(presses keys and spots)
Shallow dive: ten meters.
DANIEL
(points at integrity)
There: Near the conning tower: The flashing stars!
(arms around Diana, keys)
CLOSE BETWEEN: Daniel and Diana: Lib-DISPLAY zooms-in,-- POPS-UP the Live-Encyclopedia.
Outside GUNSHOTS THUNK DULLY in water against the hull;
Nav-display diagrams Ship-mark position and motion in the bay; Gwen controls Nav-display steering-directives;
GWEN
No further hull-integrity alarms.
PETER
Low-power weapons: handguns: Keep going, Gwen;- And keep our head down.
A DOG-BARK display-left: ITS ASTERISK SPINS and twinkles;
GWEN
(controls new)
Company has arrived.
DIANA
Do we avoid them?
GWEN
(tentatively)
We may not need-to: Their tracking-vectors aren't precise.
PETER
(interprets)
They don't see us under water.
THE SHIP SWAYS as the Engines whine-up TO A MILD ROAR;
(00:00 - This Is Your Night/Amber)
A DOG-BARK display-right: ITS ASTERISK SPINS and twinkles;
DANIEL
(more for Diana)
But they know we're still here:- That's two asterisk's twinkling.
Left asterisk moves rapidly … half way to their Ship-mark--
PETER
Coming fast, Gwen: Evasive action!
THE SHIP SWAYS with deliberation;-- Peter, Daniel, hold-on to the seat rails;
Ship-mark becomes an asterisk flashing inside a circle,--
DANIEL
(watching Gwen's display)
They've found us:- Our ship is an asterisk; Can we fire anything back at them?- Decoys? Jam? Blue books?
DIANA
(counter eyes him)
Do angels ever, take written tests?
GWEN
(examines displays)
No lock-in signature yet: We're still in their way: Running 30--35 meters-per-hesit: Accelerating.
The twinkling-spinning asterisks nearing from both sides …
Steering into a chase …
SHIP-MARK INVERTS to a circle inside a hollow asterisk flashing at the in-comers--
DANIEL
(relieved)
We're away…!- Must have been their new, clear-missiles!
(grins)
PETER
(un-relieved)
Faster, Gwen: We're suddenly glamorous, And we've out-performed their expectations.
Each asterisk passes behind the ship-mark and disappears.
Ship-mark exits the harbor for the open ocean;
EXT. SUBMARINE - HARBOR MOUTH - WEST MOONLIT (CURRENT)
Riding just under its wave, the submarine exits harbor …
INT. COMMAND CENTER - DIM RED RUNNING (RESUME)
Engines whining a roar … Gwen reactuates her right panel:-- Lib slides far; Near displays diagrammatic LIVE-VIEW night;
AN ASTERISK APPEARS onshore left behind their Ship-mark;--
DIANA
(peering back-over Gwen)
Gwen: Isn't that another asterisk, off-port?
GWEN
(presses display buttons)
Yes: We've got more company.
DANIEL
(sits at Diana's right)
Maybe we'd better "up" the acceleration: Strap yourselves, in.
PETER
(sits at Gwen's left)
Gwen: Can you give us much speed,- while keeping us below the surface?
All seat-belt;
GWEN
(keys controls)
More, yes: The controls don't say how much;- We maintained 85 underwater last time.
The ENGINES WHINE-UP EVEN MORE ambient scream;
DANIEL
(to be heard)
Do we still have any functional escape pods?!
A DOG-BARK display-left: ITS ASTERISK SPINS and twinkles-- approaching rapidly …
DIANA
(watching edgily)
Here it comes.
SHIP-MARK BECOMES A CIRCLED FLASHING ASTERISK--
A FLEET OF 6 flashing asterisks leaves shore,- spinning;
PETER
Gwen: Full-evasive …. How fast are we going?
GWEN
(checks Nav-display data)
80 meters-per-hesit. And we have additional company: They've scrambled the air-station.
(keys more)
A RUMBLY GRINDING RESONATES through the ship …
Daniel reaches across Diana and keys-up documentation on defense systems,--
DANIEL
(unto Diana)
Standard procedure: They'll try to flush us.
(begins computer access)
GWEN
(intent on her screens)
Maneuver, programmed: Ready for hop-scotch evasive in 8, 7 hesits …
GWEN (CONCURRENT)
(2.2 sec. pace)
… 6 … 5 … 4 … 3 … 2 …
PETER
(on Gwen "6")
Diana,-- Dan: Check your computer for countermeasure responses.
DIANA
(on Gwen "3", hesitant)
Gwen: Are we going to survive this?
The ENGINES SCREAM to highest pitch … Asterisk is half way;
DANIEL
(equally loudly)
Hold tight!
(unto Diana)
Ready!?
Diana nods so.
PETER
(loudly)
Now, Gwen!?
Their circled-ship-asterisk evades, left-right; They lean:
[Inner-Voice-Over is contra-phase stereo-inside]
[COMPUTER](IVO)
(forewarning)
Linx!
(SHIP VEERS LEFT)
COMPUTER
Recht!
(SHIP VEERS RIGHT)
COMPUTER
Linx!
(SHIP VEERS LEFT)
DIANA
(cheers loudly)
Breech'em, whale-girl!
PETER
(loudly)
Zoom-in on the missiles.
GWEN
(touches Nav-display)
Zooming-in.
Her Nav-display center 40% dilates to 80%, outer shaded;
The twinkling asterisk converges rapidly …
DANIEL
(reading display, loud)
Limited response, Pete: A small amount of emergency decoy-ballast: It's metal.
(points Diana to key)
The missile-asterisk disappears; the next approach;--
DIANA
(loudly)
Second wave, Gwen!
They lean:
[COMPUTER] (IVO)
(forewarning)
Recht!
(SHIP VEERS RIGHT)
COMPUTER
Linx!
(SHIP VEERS LEFT)
COMPUTER
Recht!
(SHIP VEERS RIGHT)
PETER
(calmly loud)
Decoy-ballast: Dump it, now!
Directed by Daniel, Diana presses the button:--
METAL BALLAST DUMPS noisily in hull-chutes;--
PETER
(inserts loudly)
Dive, Gwen: Push us down!
Nav-display indicates submerging …
The last pursuing missile-asterisks disappear …
Submarine seamounts appear as sub-island contours …
THE SHIP SWAYS to avoid a seamount;--
GWEN
Seamounts;- The air-assault has dissipated.
PETER
Hold us under for a couple minutes, Gwen,- Then return to the surface for top-maximum progress, Zigzag course, 20-percent off-center-line; will cost us … 2-percent: half-hour per day; and just maybe we'll avoid any new company along the way.
GWEN
(programs)
Aye … captain.
DIANA
(unto Daniel)
Not-so-silent,- not-so-deep.
(relaxes)
Despite the noise, this is your basically incredible machine.
Daniel actuates both panels:-- Lib and Live exchange.
DANIEL
Wait till you see the encyclopedia … Zirconium-96 nuclear cata-mutator reactor power to last a hundred years … ultrasophisticated computer navigation … koa-wood furnishings in the Captain's Quarters: We could be pirates of the high seas …!
DIANA
I always wondered what became of the high seas … Where do you keep your booty?!
GWEN
(stands, exiting)
Forward corridor, third doorway on the left. Peter: You have the com.
(quickly to the corridor)
DIANA
(to Daniel)
Do angels get smarter with practice?
PETER
(sits in Gwen's chair)
We're all a bit weary of the chase.
(checks his watch)
It's only 5-point-6-43 A-S on the surface.
DANIEL
(readies to change seat)
Peter: You and Gwen can take the first break;-- I'll return us to surface-speed. Diana can read her encyclopedia, to make her time worthwhile: bring her up to speed.
DIANA
(open taunt)
I knew it!- You angels are all alike: There's nothing new under the sun.
PETER
Someone had better.
(tentative to Diana)
Okay with you, Diana?
DIANA
Sure, We'll take the first shift,-- me and my Zirconium-mentor angel.
PETER
(walks away)
Thanks: Call us immediately if you get any new obstacles.
DANIEL
(moves to Gwen's seat)
Of course ….
(sits; relaxes)
Well, Diana: We've become asterisk-gazers.
DIANA
(quips)
Prematurely astir,-crazy:- The risk of desktop geezering … Ever watch a deskttop get a blowdry job, Daniel?
Daniel shakes Not-inviting.
DIANA
You angels miss some finer points.
FADE TO:
INT. COMMAND CENTER - (BEFORE NOON, HOURS LATER)
Running MEDIUM-QUIET; Daniel, space-admiral suit white, collar turned down, at Nav-console, Diana right; Nav, diagrams open ocean, course S-SE.
DANIEL
(finishes Nav-control)
… full. Surface-cruise speed: 3-hundred-10 meters-per-hesit; 20-grads eastward to center-line.
DIANA
(yawns)
It's much quieter on the surface….
DANIEL
Oh, it'd be noisy in a sprint.… So, Back to more encyclopedia lessons.
DIANA
(fingers keys)
Name your search, dude.
DANIEL
Hesit: like a moment of hesitation.
Diana types "hes" and the encyclopedia prompts "hesit" with choices and text answer,--
DIANA
Okay, here it is:
(reads aloud)
DISPLAYED SUB-TEXT EXPLANATION:
Hesit: The base unit of metric time equaling one centigrad of diurnal rotation: I.E. A ten-thousandth of a quarter mean solar day; Epoch A-D 19-hundred; Chiefly Nautical usage. See also Demur, equals a kilohesit.
DIANA
(resumes)
That's it.
DANIEL
And in plain English: A hesit is 24 hours divided by forty-thousand: or 2-point-1-6 seconds,-- which means, a meter-per-hesit is 3-and-a-half-percent faster than one-mile-per-hour: Like doing 57 instead of 55.
(smiles)
Or, Using the next-centimeter tire-size on your car.
DIANA
Daniel: Do you angels still use miles and hours, and seconds?
DANIEL
(hesitates, subdued)
Miles?- No,- not since we left, our, Earth.
DIANA
Oh. I wonder about you sometimes: You don't seem like very-smart, angels: I'm sorry if I expect too much from you.
DANIEL
That's okay: You keep surprising us: as though your science-clock were turned ahead.
DIANA
What's next, guru-da?- Tri-angel-ometry in the after-math!?
DANIEL
How's your theory of … magnetism?
DIANA
(guffaws)
Daniel! Will you, please, keep your mind on teaching me this computer-encyclopedia!?
DANIEL
(puzzles)
I am;-- I did … a quickie pop-quiz.
DIANA
(wary)
Well,- Pop:- There's no such force as magnetism: That's soshe-theory,- and a lot of Maxwellian formulae for electrical engineers.
DANIEL
(puzzles more)
How do you explain the repulsion of wires carrying opposing currents…?
DIANA
Flow-amplified deflection electrons impinging mutually extended fields, repulsively, more than attracting protons, increasing for current-flows in opposition; decreasing for currents in conjunction.
DANIEL
(takes surprise)
A new application for Zeno's paradox: What about induction in the secondary of a transformer?!
DIANA
The same: Application of a voltage on the primary displaces the free electron cloud in the secondary;- When a primary current flows, the remote electron nudging increases the Fermi temperature in the second proportionably to electron density, and a restoration current flows, back out the secondary …. Self-induction is similar, but obviously a current does flow.
(contrites)
That's how I learned it in APE 2-31 with Dr. Bedeman.
DANIEL
(recovers a beat)
Would you concur that energy itself is repulsive,- as in a transformer, energy supplied the primary, energizes and repels the secondary?
DIANA
That argument sounds entropic.
DANIEL
(nods approval)
Good. And would you concur that Maxwell's equations are a transformation of bases from electric to magnetic?
DIANA
(wrinkles nose)
Mathematicians are always, polite, when the electricians need it! … Otherwise, there's that Israeli soshe-scientist who claims that Moses discovered magnetism by letting his people wander through the wilderness forty years instead of rushing point-to-point like the electric Egyptians;- And when Moses stopped his people, the gentiles inducted away.
(flash grins … adds)
He also suggests, Jesus did his healings that way: casting-out demons into swine.
DANIEL
Interesting … And you learned all this in … what's APE 2-31?
DIANA
Applied Physics Engineering, -2-31 A-B-C,- Quantum Gradients Theory.… But don't worry about Professor Bedeman: He's a nice academic kook: His doctoral thesis was:--
(phrasing)
On Amortization-Blocking In Spermatozoic Pseudo-Species By Naturally Occurring Saline Solutions;- Did his research at the Dead Sea:- Thought he was on a lead for virginal birthing.…
(a beat, confides)
You are not the first cosmic space aliens I've known, Daniel.
DANIEL
(avoids a beat)
Interesting: Accounts for brine shrimp and pickles: Let's continue.
DIANA
Is our destination on this encyclopedia?
She types "iti" and it prompts "itinerary" with choices and global map of their course, California to the South Pole;--
DANIEL
Good question. Our host-builders must have programmed this decades ago:-- Their polar-ice-flow information could be out-of-date.
DIANA
Suppose our destination no longer exists!?
DANIEL
But we've been there two weeks ago.
DIANA
(counters)
In your, world, Daniel!
DANIEL
(contrite)
Right.
DIANA
Is there a way to change the programmed destination?
She types "alte" and it prompts "alternates" with choices and a web of ocean-crossing courses;--
DANIEL
Gwen didn't find it;-- She said it was not at the controls.
DIANA
(notices web)
I wonder what Gwen … Uh-oh, Daniel: The whole world has been taken-over by you space aliens.
DANIEL
Why do you think there's only one, kind of space alien?… Looks like a regular network:- I ponder if that means company at the South Pole.…
DIANA
You're not, expecting company!? Why do angels exist…?!
A RED BAR FLASHES on his Nav-display top-left corner;--
DANIEL
Whoa-- d้-jเ vu!
DIANA
(notices red-bar)
What's that flashing red bar?!
DANIEL
(unsettles)
Wake-up time: Call Gwen and Peter back to duty-station: It's an over-the-horizon detector: Something out there far away.
DIANA
How soon will it be viewable?
DANIEL
(keys course-change)
It's probably an island base … Let's dodge this old treachery, with a new tack.
Nav-display shows course adjusting westward to S-SW;
DIANA
You can't dog an old trick with a new teacher.
He smirks … and points: They watch for a moment …
FADE TO:
INT. CORRIDOR - RED RUNNING (NEXT DAY LATE AFTERNOON)
Daniel, clean face, hair combed, slows to pass quietly:--
CAPTAIN'S QUARTERS: The door ajar, SLOT VIEW:
Backside, Diana, clean face, hair combed, in stylish warm submariner crew-clothes, kneels at her bed, head bowed--
DIANA
(praying softly)
… and keep them well … Especially angel-Gwen: for she is all the family I have left …. And, most of all, Dear Father-Mother-God: Forgive your angels: for these three are incompetent.…
(silent nod)
He stifles a guffaw; She stands; and he sneaks ahead …
INT. COMMAND CENTER - SOUTH POLE (SAME MOMENT)
Cruising; All cleaned up: Gwen watches Nav-display approach to the majestic glacial ice cap; Peter reads a Lib-display;
A low GAP APPEARS in the glacier ice wall before them;
PETER
(scan-reads)
The ice cap appears fairly, stable, over decades,-- or maybe just this, area …. Located an entrance, yet?
GWEN
(steady to the display)
Maybe; -it's still on auto-pilot:- but, Here.
(points to the gap)
PETER
(leans-looks, digresses)
I'm glad this boat held together … The engines didn't quit this time:- No-one left their jacket melting on reactor heat-pipes. The close-range gunshots from the dock penetrated the outer uranium clad, but, we didn't sink. The dock crews must have known enough to not foul the machinery,- though it is a mess …
RHYTHMIC CLOMPING in the corridor:--
Daniel enters, parade stop. Sidesteps. Backs to the wall.
DANIEL
(erect salute)
Tent! Hut! Sergeant Lamb-Bo, Peep! Is on the con'deck!
Diana enters, side-glancing at Daniel;-- He tags behind …
PETER
Good afternoon, bright-eyes;- Nice outfit.
DIANA
Hello, Peter; Gwen, I'm bored: Are we there yet? I'm hungry again.
GWEN
(resumes her display)
We have an entrance, now.
They approach the ice-port's tunnel … and slow … in through the passage dimly lit by their conning floodlights …
DIANA
Gwen: Is the food in the Captain's refrigerator any worth eating?
DANIEL
(unnecessarily loud)
Food!- I forgot all about partying!
PETER
Did you inspect any of the pantry storage-foods?- Might be better.
DIANA
I rehydrated a freeze-dry pack of turkey: It smells good but I didn't taste it … yet.
Daniel exits to the corridor--
DANIEL
(invites loud)
Last chance for a party, guys: Come-on, Diana: Let's prepare a feast. And invite those up-town penguins,- and the kissing-seals: Do you know about kissing-seals?
(CORRIDOR REVERBERATES)
You can show me how to cook turkey on this planet.
GWEN
Go ahead, Di: We'll watch the docking procedures.
DIANA
(exits tentatively)
Whose side are we on, in a case like this?
INT. CONNING TOWER - (EVENING: AN HOUR LATER)
They climb: Peter leads with ropes; Diana in winter jacket; Gwen; Daniel last … Open the top-hatch, and exit …
DANIEL
(up to hostess)
That was delicious, Diana: You sure you won't stay on this planet, and cook turkeys?
DIANA
(half out; face down-in)
I don't do submarines, Daniel.
DANIEL
(finishes to himself)
Freeze-dried lettuce on crackers was interesting.
INT. ICE CAVERN - DOCK - CONNING FLOODLIGHT (CONTINUOUS)
Acoustically live decked with aluminum; floodlight swaying, the submarine leans-and-bobs slowly at dock; Peter runs the length, tying mooring-lines; Gwen exits, as Diana yields …
THE SUBMARINE CONNING MOUND with gaping bullet-tear-holes, power saw grooves, drill dents. She surveys, patting hands.
DIANA
(sniffs deep, returns)
Actually …
(pauses for Daniel up)
It's warm in here: barely freezing.
DANIEL
(exits)
The seawater keeps it constant just below zero.
And he closes the top-hatch,--
And spins the hatch-lock a full turn;
GWEN
(surveying, points)
There's the doorway,-- over there, against the metal wall.
DANIEL
(looks)
So similar ….
Peter approaches on the dock as they begin to descend:
PETER
Dan: Don't look back: Those bullet-holes in the conning tower weren't ordinary pistol-powered.
They PEEK-BACK quiet, at the bullet-tear-holes …
Then steady-step down the submarine's extended top …
THE DOCK
And jump to,- and looking about, cross the CREAKING DECK …
AT THE DOOR, They speak again, quieter--
DIANA
What if it's locked, Gwen? Or do you angels have the keys to the universe?!
Peter holds a flashlight to the keyhole in the wall next to the doorhandle while Gwen tries her prior keys, which fail;
DIANA
Definitely arcane.- And do you angels know which one?!
GWEN
(a key failing)
My house keys worked.
(tries more keys)
DANIEL
My front door key didn't;-- Back door was all right.
PETER
(more to Gwen)
Not the same world planet;- Close,- real close: but not identical.
DANIEL
(amends)
I had two undergrads with me: Told them the U-F-O landing had caused excessive weathering;-- And they believed, me!
(piqued)
I, don't recall being so gullible before graduation!
GWEN
(last key failing)
None of these work.
All but Diana, mutually pensive;--
PETER
Double check them…!?
DIANA
(jangles a chain of keys)
Would you like to try these, Gwen?
(gives them)
These were in Captain's Quarter,- laid flat under the mattress.
GWEN
Thank you.
(tries the new keys)
DANIEL
(chides)
The princess and the Quarter, key.
Diana cock-glances Daniel.
PETER
(to Daniel)
And, How many U-F-O's landed while you, were in college, Dan?
DANIEL
(incredulous)
A lot more than Blue Book was admitting!
This key works,--
The door CLICKS OPEN, slowly;-- BRIGHT LIGHT floods out …
They look about, and in, and about again,--
And enter, silently ….
INT. LABORATORY - ENTRY CORRIDOR - WELL-LIT (CONTINUOUS)
Conning floodlight barely visible; Peter leads-in; Diana, Gwen, Daniel, keep tight formation,--
DANIEL
(entering very quietly)
Now I wish they didn't, have lights in here … Do I hear other voices?!
(inside, stifles)
All halt.
VOICES AD LIB around the corner ahead, echo lightly from aluminum walls, floors, ceiling; Corridors stretch to dim …
PETER
(quietly unto Diana)
Diana: Take the lead: You're less obvious.
(flanks opposite Gwen)
DIANA
(quietly)
Do chickens have angels…?!
(leads cautiously)
DANIEL
(quietly exasperates)
Shush,- Or we'll be roasted turkey-tails!
DIANA
(very quiet)
Or picking-up hardboiled eggs….
They stroll tightly forward, eyes barely looking about …
Lab-white-clad PERSONNEL cross the next corner ad lib …
Corridor corners lead off figures-and-arrows …
Across the corner … and onward passed doors, some open, lit, occupied, figure-labeled or paper-slipped.
GWEN
(unto Diana)
Let's skip this museum, Di: Walk like you're taking us directly, and don't turn to talk.
DIANA
(puzzles)
The angelic concept of hindsight, puzzles me, Gwen.
They quicken their pace moderately … and approach …
A LARGE LIGHTED RECEPTION AREA full of animal artifacts, full-size glass-encased taxidermies of dinosaurs and less-descript creatures, situated center.
And pause. More white-clad Personnel mill about;
GWEN
Check that wall-directory,-- just in case.
(nods direction)
Diana leads to a large diagram on a wall.
GWEN
(arriving, quietly)
It's a picture-directory:
(points arm through)
We're here.…
(traces a course)
And this leads to the exit-vehicle.
Gwen looks a hint in the direction,--
Diana takes it,- leading into another corridor …
6 Personnel approach, discussing ad lib …
POV: Personnel passing half-interested in them--
ONE
(smiling at Diana)
Finding your way, new-bee?
DIANA
(prompt official dour)
Yes, thank you, mister.
SECOND
(a beat to themselves)
Military recruits moving-in?
THIRD
Unusual grade for escort.
ONE
Are they ours?!
(chuckles)
THIRD
U-N rank, maybe?
SECOND
Probably NATO lost in the wrong ocean again.
Personnel chuckle, grin, and ad lib onward …
POV: Diana et al continuing beyond, half-watch them go …
ANOTHER CORRIDOR: Locating … arriving, Gwen surveys about:
A WINDOWED ACCESS DOOR. Diana glances in--
DIANA
(quips)
People who need peepholes ….
GWEN
(concludes)
This must be it.
Diana opens the door;-- Peter scoots in, and ahead;--
They follow,-- Daniel closing the door stealthily ….
INT. SHORT CONNECTING ACCESS CORRIDOR - (CONTINUOUS)
Trotting through the narrow winding way connecting to the …
INT. FLUSH GLASS GALLERY - MILES-SHEER SILO - (CONTINUOUS)
Wrapping, overlooking the depths; They slow to sauntering …
(00:00 - She's A Beauty/The Tubes)
Daniel checks up and down the windows, craning to see--
DANIEL
I think we're missing a moon-ship…?
EXT. - LOOKING IN, DOWN, UP, BEHIND
Diana is a beauty among fashion models, talking, pointing …
DIANA (VO)
Could it be farther down below?
DANIEL (VO)
Are you withholding a key?
Diana shakes innocent-no.
GWEN (VO)
Move on … Keep going … There is, some, vessel, in this direction….
Meandering along … passing inside-elevators …
PETER (VO)
What do you suppose they drilled?
DANIEL (VO)
If it's not a missile silo…?
In the landing bay, Peter opens the door, and They enter …
INT. LANDING CORRIDOR - READY ELEVATORS - (AS CONTINUOUS)
DANIEL
(worried)
Where, Gwen?
DIANA
Try for the elevated view?
They take an open elevator, up.
INT. CLOSED HANGAR, MOON-ROCKET SUPERCRUISER - DIM LIT
Elevator opens; They exit, marveling the Supercruiser sled, gigantic sleek long inverted-thick-"U"-wing, on tip-skates:
DIANA
(marvels)
Is this your moon rocket?!
DANIEL
Is this, even, a moon, rocket!?- Looks more like a 19-50's train.
They approach and inspect along, toward the front landing …
PETER
Big enough.
(spots the insignia)
Ohhh:- This looks Nazi Third Reich.
A PROMINENT COUNTERCLOCKWISE SWASTIKA
DANIEL
("hahkenkroitz")
Actually not, Pete: The hakenkreuz points the other way: righthanded …
(examines both hands)
Wait a sec.…
(unto Diana)
Diana, Are you righthanded, or lefthanded?
DIANA
Righthanded.
DANIEL
Of course, you're righthanded,-- that's not what I meant.
DIANA
That is, what you asked.
DANIEL
What I mean is,--
(right hand to Diana)
Are you this-handed?
DIANA
(right hand to Daniel)
Yes, I'm this-handed.
DANIEL
Okay,-- You're righthanded.
DIANA
For once you're right, Daniel!
PETER
But that can't be a pivotal factor.
DANIEL
Probably true; May be a connection.
GWEN
This may be closer to space alien.
DANIEL
Weren't we, the space aliens…?
Diana gives him a big noticeable smile.
PETER
Will this need a launch ramp?
Daniel, Diana likewise, look through the underside length …
DANIEL
Now, This, is interesting wing-aerodynamics:- Ever seen a WIG?
DIANA
(thinks a beat)
You mean, Wing-In-Ground?
DANIEL
Exactly: Aerodynamic reflection.
DIANA
This is as-wide; but too long: the air will escape before the rear.
DANIEL
Not for supersonic, WIG:- the air slows and compresses… maybe enough.
They step onto a personnel elevator-landing … and ascend …
INT. SUPERCRUISER, NARROW LOW CORRIDOR TO THE CONTROL ROOM
Gwen coming, enters to sit Helm-left; Peter left, Diana, …
DANIEL
(last in, hypes)
To your stations, Cadets!
INT. CONTROL ROOM - MODERATELY LIGHTED (CONTINUOUS)
Walls block-padded white; wraparound nose-cone window; Gwen preparing launch; They sit reclined in cushion-chairs at consoles semicircled with heads near …
DANIEL
(sits Nav-right)
New equipment … Handle this, Gwen?
(quieter to Diana)
Majored in pure applied confidence.
PETER
Think this is ready to go, Gwen?
GWEN
(touch-scans, monotone)
System: Nominal … Monitor nominal … Response: Nominal … Load: Nominal … Telemetry: Nominal … Registration: Nominal … Power: Nominal … Support: Nominal … Function: Nominal … Ambient: Nominal … Exterior nominal … Sequence: Nominal … Go: Nominal.
DANIEL
(busying but grins)
Experience: Nominal.
DIANA
(grins to Daniel)
Explanation: Nominal.
DANIEL
(mid buttons, unto Diana)
Is everyone comfortable?
(to all)
We've got Sequence-for-launch at 30 hesits,- and counting down.
DIANA
(interested)
Can we shorten that,- in case we're discovered?
Daniel shakes no.
PETER
(pressing buttons)
Exterior controls show green across-the-board …
(peers out-forward)
Opening the hangar door, now.
HANGAR BRIGHTENS slowly with indirect outdoor light …
EXT. OPENING HANGAR DOOR - SNOW DRIFTS - LOW DAY (CURRENT)
Amid scant 15 deg. rear-daylight … behind the moon-rocket.
INT. CONTROL ROOM - (RESUME CURRENT)
Before them is a hundred miles straight-ahead ice runway.
DANIEL
Whoa,- We've got a long way to go!
GWEN
Final-check your seat belts.
A LASER BLAST from ground level-- steams runway snow ahead. Hangar color-trim traffic lights indicate ready for launch.
DIANA
Must be easy maintenance on ice.
They latch and check their seat belts; a YELLOW ALERT BLINKS on Peter's status controls;
DANIEL
(quick-checks Diana's)
Ready for the "G" ride?
(back to his display)
Okay; T-minus-15 hesits, Counting.
PETER
(intent on his display)
We've got a yellow-status on … Oh-boy, The gantry elevator!
(looks at Gwen)
Gwen: Any reason for, not, going?
GWEN
No: What's the delay?
PETER
Gantry elevator unlocked-unlatched:
Someone's following us up!
GWEN
Will the elevator-exit be exposed?
PETER
(rechecks display)
Says … Launch Status, this side.
GWEN
(thoughtfully)
I hope they stay-out during launch.
DANIEL
(mock-rallies)
Once-again, it's once-again,- and all-for-one, and one-for all.
(grins)
DIANA

You're so cryptic, Daniel …

A little mission humor here: Now we watch for trouble on the horizon.
(looks out)
Diana's star-map shows south-polar night-sky with several red-flagged satellites gathering above, as they rise rapidly through snow-hazy clouds to clear sky …
DIANA
(unto Gwen, points)
Gwen: Is this trouble?
Gwen busy, looks, briefly concerned … resumes at her own …
DANIEL
(looks high above)
The horizon fell flat, and the sky follows suit,-- in clubs no doubt?
(to Diana's, quieter)
What is it?- DEW drops, again?
PETER
(a beat, concerned)
Gwen? What is it?
GWEN
(slowly at first)
Guys:
(pauses)
The distant-object motion detector, radar, is registering several non-ballistic satellites ephemerides, changing: There's not going to be a third world-war on this planet.
Startled-puzzled glares from all;--
DANIEL
(looks about, to Gwen)
Meaning … what trouble … Gwen?!
DIANA
Strategic Defense Initiative, Daniel,- Or, Don't you angels read the local daily … planet … papers?
DANIEL
(exasperates among)
You mean … Laser cannons … S-D-I … actually works!?
DIANA
It's been in place for a decade: It should, work.
Sky is turning dark blue to black, 7 mi. up (at 1 g) …
PETER
(ponders to Diana)
A-B-M's, -Anti-Ballistic-Missiles,- didn't survive political-cuts, on our Earth, Diana. And S-D-I didn't survive the testing phase …. Except for MIL-STAR, star-peace failed.
DIANA
(horrified)
And now they're going to zap us down!?- Do you angels give fast last rights…?!
GWEN
(somewhat urgently)
Guys: They are gathering above us!
PETER
(thinks aloud)
S-D-I was to be selective, --and controllable,-- publicly visible detente.
(assures)
Gwen: Just keep us heading "up", straight-and-narrow,- and maybe they'll take us for an unscheduled science-sounding rocket on a tilt: If we deviate, they'll terminate us where we are,-- but we're far off their track: They may not risk revealing their S-D-I capabilities, attributes, extremities, failures.…
DANIEL
(bothered-relief shiver)
Counter-detente star-dust, before our time:
(hyper-lightens)
But, For the moment, We're integral … at T-plus-60 hesits.
(mock-exasperates French)
Plooh sah shahnhge,- plooh sah mem!
DIANA
(politely interprets)
More changes: more memories.
Daniel accepts her bit of wisdom.
PETER
(improves)
Change, meters, memory -- Poetic cadence: 1, 2, 3.
DANIEL
(to Diana)
The more he changes it, the more it evens-out.
Gwen giggles.
PETER
You have a clever one to add, Gwen?
GWEN
(smiling)
I recognize Harry's undergraduate Nuclear Engineering gripe: "More changes: More memos."
All laugh.
PETER
(laugh-smiles)
Right! Straight, All the way, Gwen!
Sky is black with stars, 30 mi. up (at 1 g).
INT. CONTROL ROOM - BACKWARD, MOON BACK - SUNNY (DAY LATER)
Hilly backside below, rising large, eclipsing Earth; black starry sky, sun level; They nap reclined, except Diana now in stylish modern advanced space-traveler padded-alumina wear, watches widescreen SatNewsNetwork Eye-Point News coverage of the UFO-alien search, its signal stalling …
A display icon BEEP-BEEP-BEEPS and repeats, awaking Gwen;--
GWEN
(stirs, taps display)
How are you doing, Diana?
Beeper stopped.
DIANA
All right: We're almost there.… I think I have the hang of astronaut-ing … Weightless waiting ….
(grins at Gwen)
Exchanges the third and fourth dimensions.
GWEN
(leans to Diana's)
What are you watching?
DIANA
Oh…, Kroown T-V was decrying our local police for letting certain space-aliens escape;-- It was a weekend News-Sat link, eclipsed.
DANIEL
(stirs, wide-eyes moon)
Dey-zha vue!- You let us sleep rather long, Diana!
DIANA
You angels need your rest:-- God knows, You don't get any on Earth.
DANIEL
(smiles)
I've heard:- It's all pinheads and needle eyes for angels and camels. But, This space-admiral needs to lavat-ate before the littlest piggy wee-wee-wee's all the way home.
Gets up, grabs rails-- and wobbly float-walks back to exit:
DANIEL
(hand after hand)
Woow …!
(grins)
Mag'walking again: an Olympian event you never forget!
(exits, second thought)
Or, Do we call this, Systematic electron deflection-containment ambulating?
GWEN
(calls back)
There are fresh leftovers in the micro:- Just press the trigger button,-- and hang on!
DANIEL (OS)
Thanks!-- And hang-on?
OS: A SOFT WHOOMP! His food is cooked.
DANIEL (OS)
(bemused)
That, was fast….
The hilly mottled terminator passes, close upward, 10 sec.…
DIANA
Should tell him it's a micro-E-M-P.
GWEN
He has a doctorate in engineering:- He can figure it out fast, himself.
DANIEL (OS)
(to himself)
Probably operates at the edge of the cosmic waterhole frequencies: H and O-H … Probably a steam-laser….
GWEN

E-T-A: De-orbit-burn in 50 hesits,- for our backside rendezvous…!
(unto Diana)
What missiles await us back here?
Peter fully wakes,- operates his controls;
DIANA
Red … according to Kroown T-V.
BLACK MOON, a blotch of floodlight racing parallel below …
GWEN
(puzzles)
Red?
DIANA
Looks like we're not alone.
(points out)
GWEN
Exterior floods:- our footprint. Farther ahead is the port.
DIANA
(searches out-about)
I still feel, not, alone.…
PETER
(a beat, invents)
In News-induction-syndrome, Diana, the brain forms a special register for news-style information;- But in a media-vacuum like when the Apollo astronauts came out from behind the moon, and didn't tell, the residual form in that register got archived: Spacer news became form-fulfilling.
DIANA
(a beat, plays along)
You don't say ….
PETER
(plays smile)
Ex'actly ….
INT. -SAME- (A MINUTE LATER)

Daniel messengers his hot food tray quickly to his seat--
DANIEL
(softly)
Weee … artificial gravity … Food is still too hot but, Which is faster: Moon-landing, Or cooling the micro?
(grins; float-sits)
The near moonscape rising eclipses the far … sunset …
Then the lunar port-doors …
And out-gasses … and the dock column top …
And the Supercruiser slows to land level just inside.…

INT. MOON-PORT STATION-CAVERN - CORRIDORS - WELL-LIGHTED

DANIEL
(stirring a mash)
E-M-peas and R-F-potatoes …
DIANA
(admires-about a beat)
Wouldn't these lights wear-out after centuries?- Or, have space angels been here, recently?
PETER
We're sure to meet space -aliens- somewhere,- sometime: Why not here?
DANIEL
(lip-tests, fusses)
Yeouch:- This is still too hot!
(blows on sporked piece)
Does blowing on hot food work in outer space?
(grins)
Just being a little silly….
DIANA
Practicing to become a big silly…?
PETER
(grins at her a beat)
You set the micro too high, Dan.
DANIEL
No…, I set the micro a little over, so this'd cool before we landed: A landing significantly quicker than I recall of two weeks ago.
PETER
(nonchalant)
May have been the phase of the moon and other course variables.
DANIEL
Not lunar phase: We launched from the South Pole.
PETER
Orbit eccentricities could have put us closer to the surface.
DANIEL
Deceleration energy depends on the moon's radius,- for essentially an infinite starting radius.
PETER
Okay: You've guessed;-- We can tell you, now: This moon is smaller than ours.
A RAILED LEDGE
Overlooking miles-deep cavern of stealth-black starships;
DANIEL
(mildly surprised)
How'd you know that?!
(unanswered)
GWEN
(long hushed awe)
It's still awesome…!
DIANA
(awed, brightens to grin)
Kilometers, deep! … A shipping mall of space-shops! … Is the whole moon a giant spaceport dry-lock?!
(sombers)
Looks abandoned:- Where'd they go?
DANIEL
You'll get used to the runway effect, Diana.
DIANA
(points to a big ship)
There: How about that one: It's got ample room for interstellar hops…!
PETER
Seems to be about the biggest … May be a different floor:- Ours must be here somewhere.
(looks deeper)
DANIEL
It's on Earth …
(self-corrects)
Our, original, galaxy-ship, on, their, planet, Earth.
PETER
(reconsiders)
Could be in another cavern.
DANIEL
Or smashed and destroyed by comets.
GWEN
(points to elevator)
There's the elevator.
PETER
(points their equivalent)
That one!- Looks just like ours…!
Gwen and Diana lead them, strolling toward the elevator;
DANIEL
(observes chagrined)
Alas: We've missed the opportunity to split stock shares in multilevel spaceship marketing:--
(full-grin-chides)
We could have been ult'rich escaping space-aliens!
GWEN
(topic ahead)
Diana: What did you mean: Their SpaceGuard rockets are, red?- Chinese?
DIANA
Soviet Union.
PETER
You mean the U.S.S.R.…!?
DIANA
Yes: Why?
GWEN
Didn't the U.S.S.R. disintegrate, on your Earth?
DIANA
No: Why?
PETER
What year is this?
They pass A DISPLAY CASE containing a long six-legged furry reptile, live … lingering beyond while Diana looks closer …
DIANA
(rounding)
Hungh…?- 19-97.…
DANIEL
(slowing beyond)
Whoa, That's years before we left.
(examines his watch)
PETER
That is, after the U.S.S.R. fell.
DANIEL
Pete: You never reset your watch: It synchronized us to 19-97.
GWEN
(to Diana)
Was there a restructuring of their economy?
VIS-A-VIS PEERING THROUGH, Diana slowly circles all sides--
DIANA
Oh, yes: Their perestroika is doing economic superpower status wonders. I wonder what the people look like, that must feed it….
DANIEL
An interesting thought, Gwen: Sub-lunar dinosaurs: Earth had microbes following the so-called Period of Heavy Bombardment;- The moon should have, too, growing in gigantic low-gravity, wet lun-ode caverns: Both were seeded.
They leave Diana, and saunter-on for the elevator;
GWEN
Why do you so-call, it, bombarding?
DANIEL
The excessive meteoritic dust, and atmosphere thick with carbolic acid steam … should have had more a burp barding effect.
PETER
(a beat)
There could be prehistoric microbes up here, still.
GWEN
Light is needed to grow dinosaurs.
DANIEL
Little or none, for deep sea fish.
PETER
And maybe a dauphin, in the moon!
They giggle, and enter
THE GLASS-WALLED ELEVATOR
Diana trots to enter with them; Daniel in the middle--
DANIEL
(looks above the door)
Peter: Did you remember which floor it's on?
PETER
(slow start-up)
Ahhh, Yes: Right below the subspace sandwich shop ….- Care to place an order at the elevator panel:-- your favorite, green swiss on alien wry?
Diana's in; The door slowly closes …
DANIEL
(frown-considers)
Is that before, or after, cosmic notions?- I must replace my fore-chewn eraser.
GWEN
(chuckles unto Diana)
They get a rise out of "elevator" jokes.
The door is closed; --LOCKS--
AND DESCENDS …
INT. ELEVATOR - DESCENDING, FLOORS BELOW - (MOMENT LATER)
They watch the spaceships passing-up …
PETER
Diana: Was there a Cold War on your planet?
DIANA
You mean the superpowers' nuclear armament build-up race between the U.S.A., U.S.S.R., Germany, and California?
DANIEL
(tickled)
California?- What'd we, do in the Cold War?
DIANA
(possessive)
Our-Governor "Nuke, Duke'm-again," detonated nuclear bombs underground to trigger the coastal faults and make the inevitable, predictable …. Started a small quake that brought-down the Oakland Freeway stack, in '89; but not the big-one….
PETER
How did Germany enter the Cold War?
GWEN
(quickens)
Diana: Who won the last World War?
DIANA
The Allied Powers,- repelled the Prussian Axis Powers, in 1918.
Daniel looks worried;
PETER
(surprised)
Was there no second World War that fully mobilized the U.S.A?
DIANA
(curious shakes no)
No…, unless you mean the war with Japan;- We used the first atomic nuclear bombs there. Why?
DANIEL
(droop-faces wall)
Oh, Lord: This room is too small to feel homesick!
GWEN
(arm on his shoulders)
Daniel: They didn't suffer a genocidal holocaust here.
DANIEL
(sours)
Nobody wanted our holocaust, Gwen,- But it was, according to Jeremiah's prophecy:- When Hubble measured the heaven by cosmic expansion redshift in '35, and Lehmann found the solid core of the Earth by seismology, in '36 … The seed of Israel was doomed to be cast off for all they'd done.
(deepens)
But if prophecy failed, where there was no vision …
(head down hard-out)
Oh, G'd:- The people…!
DIANA
(somber helpful lecture)
There was, a holocaust in Germany,- if that's what you're looking-for:- Hitler's 19-37 "Volks-Fahren" five-year-plan, took drastic measures to accelerate their economic recovery by conscripting the young people for military build-up,- but their messianic and rabbinic communities were predicting Hitler was leading them to an Armageddon, and refused to let them serve; Hitler interned whole families in work-camps; some university Jews kept their freedom by helping implement his plans for atomic energy; but those conditions exhausted their resources and tens of thousands perished of hunger,- and Hitler's Commandants ordered a termination of the inoperable.… The final holocaust came when a Dresden graphite nuclear reactor prototype, exploded, eradicating millions, the metropolis, along with thousands of American, European, and Eu-Russian troops stationed there to reinforce their humanitarian efforts.… Hitler suicided and nobody understood what had happened … 'til Chernobyl. Does that help you angels…?
PETER
(handles his shoulder)
Small reprieve, Dan:- Not even a kinder-gentler Hitler could have prevented Jeremiah's prophecy,- though he prevent a world at war.
(glances at Gwen)
Don't say it, Gwen.
GWEN
(solemn)
What would you not, have me say, Peter?
The elevator arrives at their choice landing;
DANIEL
(fills humorlessly)
That's one small stoop, for a man; and one giant relief, for mankind.
(inhales, firms, exhales)
EXT. A PIER IN THE DEPTHS - ELEVATOR - (AS CONTINUOUS)
DOOR OPENS, and They exit--
DANIEL
(a beat, finishes topic)
… though not the last of Jeremiah's prophecy:- There's still the final dissolution of the nation of Israel when the moon is moved in its orbit … probably in three more centuries.
(resumes dry-snobbishly)
I'll, forego, my guacamole, chopped liver and onions subspace sandwich.
DIANA
(admiring-up the ship)
This is, the right floor!
THE STARSHIP: They proceed into the air-lock …
Gwen activates a panel:-- the DOOR CLOSES behind.
INT. STARSHIP AIR-LOCK - (AS CONTINUOUS)
Outer Door shut: REPRESSURIZATION HISS …
DIANA
This is what you angels landed in?
Inner Door opens to pink AIRGLOW;- They wander in;
DANIEL
(dry-snobbish shrugs)
Home-again, home-again, jiggity-joose.
(saunters in)
INT. STARSHIP COMMAND CENTER - (MINUTE LATER)
360-surrounded by the spaceport cavern; They enter and sit: Gwen at the Helm, left, activates controls; Diana marvels …
DANIEL
(lounges at Nav, right)
This is so blas้: If only we could find Earth, again,-- our Earth.
DIANA
(stands at his right)
Long-gone, I suppose, Daniel.
PETER
(sits behind: captain)
Quite gone: Eons ago. Up elevator! Sit tall!
SPACESHIPS REMOVE ABOUT,- clearing a path above …
Their Starship extracts …
And elevates …
The overhead moon-doors open, as the Starship rises …
And up through the sparkly-pink AIRGLOW permeating the portal zone 100 meters, They feel wholly weighted-down:
DIANA
(surprised, stiff erect)
Hey: This is violative!
DANIEL
It's the plasma-trap-field for the space-station atmosphere:- no worse than flatsheet-lightning.
DIANA
(gawks irritated)
I'm glad, angels, know it's "safe" violation: Couldn't we-Earthers, have waited outside?
(shivers upright, petty)
Oh, forget it:- You angels don't understand ordinary feelings.
Above the pink air zone, Diana sits aside; while outside
PORTAL LIGHT SPLATTERS the lunar landscape from low …
The moon-doors (OS) close, EXTERMINATING THE MOON BLACK, to a myriad stars; Interior light is low soft from wall-glows; Large Soffit Displays monitor the receding moon surface …
DANIEL
(focuses; to Gwen)
Think you're ready for this again,- Or shall I assist the helm?
GWEN
(smiles, keys)
Sure, Dan: A piece of gefilte fish.
DANIEL
(break-laughs)
Okay, matzo-men!-
(leans back)
Back to space-ic training!
(00:00 - This Is The Time/Nathalie Page)
Gwen controls: the Starship ascends, without plume; while laser-flames flurry above a spot far east; [REF Fling10]
DIANA
(to Peter)
This ship uses, something, for propulsion…?
PETER
Mass-energy coupling most likely … Dan: What new information do you get on this starship?
Daniel leans to his Nav displays,- And keys …
GWEN
(noticing the lasering)
Peter, Do you see that?
PETER
(looks … the lasering)
Yes… Are those, Safeguard missiles?
GWEN
(to her Helm display)
It has weapons-tracking on it …
(unto Daniel)
Daniel, What do you make of this?
Daniel touches the weapons-flag on his Nav display …
DANIEL
Monitoring laser fire only; and not preparing to return fire … Or yet …
(touches the prior)
And, nothing new on propulsion:- No direct information … for consistent documentation practice.
DIANA
(offers)
Or, proprietary.
DANIEL
(mock-exasperates)
Proprietary hah! A cosmic constant!
DIANA
(sincere)
I only meant, you lost space-angels must have your own leader, somewhere.
GWEN
(concludes)
Guys: They are not following.
DANIEL
(quips to Peter)
Your small reprieve returns to you.
The moon and east laser-flame flurry recede.…
FADE TO:
INT. COMMAND - NEARING JUPITER-STAR - (NEXT HALFDAY)
Stars steady; but brown-orange glowing JUPITER-star and its orange-day-lit moons quick, in 4 min.
Gwen at Helm; Daniel, Nav; Peter, captain's chair; Diana, a starship-jacket over her padded-alumina wear, leans sitting on Daniel's chair right, watching awed …
GWEN
(unto Peter, curious)
Peter … At this speed and rate of acceleration last time, at half a day, we passed Jupiter … and Pluto next morning at the speed of light.
PETER
(noncommittal)
Yes …
And …?
DANIEL
This is impossible:--
(points to Jupiter-star)
That's a star!- not a planet!
PETER
(noncommittal)
Yes ….
DANIEL
(to Diana)
I don't think he's listening.
DIANA
(to Daniel)
Jupiter is, a star.
DANIEL
(startled)
What kind of star, is Jupiter?
PETER
This isn't our own solar system, Dan.
DANIEL
(mildly exasperates)
Then, Why should it have been so similar?! And why should it be any different?!- What's the likelihood of landing on a planet where the people know our faces, speak plain English, but significant facts are not as they were?- Sisters, clocks, holocausts, wars, moons, planets, rocket ships,-- stars!
PETER
(lectures)
Incredibly high, Dan:- Firstly: Solar nebula planets form in pairs from ring quadruplets of near-equal mass: Our Venus-Earth pair, Uranus-Neptune pair … Jupiter and Saturn, were an upset-pair adding 3-plus-1 masses instead of 2-plus-2, -caused by gravitation interfering with the forming sun and rhythmic distemper;
(phrases)
Secondly they self-arrange in Bode-Titius order: a predominant period-resonance ratio of 3-to-1, distance ratio of 2-to-1,- and augmented by solar-spin tidal-drag …. Which puts Venus, Earth, or Mars, within 60 degrees Celsius of temperate at the equator; and another within 60 to a hundred-30, oppositely.
(phrases)
Thirdly, Inner planets atmospheres were leftovers from the sun taking down the nebula by light pressure Poynting-Robertson drag and solar-wind, leaving them too rarefied of hydrogen to form gas-planets.
(phrases)
The result is, Every solar system has one or two habitable inner-system rock-planets in temperate orbits,- eventually like Earth.
DANIEL
The classical Drake Equation was not so generous: by many negative orders of probability.
PETER
(answers)
Canonical Drake Equations include deterministic inefficiencies to prevent the public from expecting too much of government astronomics: Mainly they presume random planets in random order;- then focus on the likelihood of civilization becoming intelligent, randomly: Small indeed are their prospects … And preclude discussion of spacer gods escaping destroyed planets, teaching mankind to propagate … and rogue planets, flung-away from supernovae, which may ultimately prove more numerous.
(to Diana)
Diana, Is either of your planets, Mars or Venus, habitable?
DIANA
No: Venus overheated, too close to the sun, and too much uranium in its mantle; Mars and Astra were too small to sustain themselves.
PETER
(discourses)
Okay.- Facts more similar than not: But the likelihood that we found a planet with events very similar to ours, may impute how we got here:- whether our expectations affected our ultimate selection,- or vice versus.…
(puzzles)
No … Some events must be more like prophecies,- or rather, admitted inevitabilities; Otherwise, on the whole, we came to a planet where we could fit-in individually, socially survivably … Part of the cosmic-elevator process: Natural selection among trillions of galaxies, and trillions of planets in each.… Likenable to photons absorbed by atoms when the energy, phase, and polarity is right:
(elates)
A cosmos teeming with opportunities for collecting habitation.
GWEN
(responds to Peter)
Maybe that's what Harry felt: There may have been no choice planet for all four of us to return-to.
DANIEL
Sure, Pete: And growing-up consists of absorbing one's whole photon -to Earth,- before radiating-on.
(prepostulates to Gwen)
Maybe there's a low-frequency cosmic rhythm coupling two similar fine-split Harry-states: allowing him to ascend, but not descend the same way back, to …
(to Diana)
Your Earth,-- Diana: Are the moons of Jupiter-star inhabited?
DIANA
Basic vegetation, in the seas on Europa;- too little atmosphere to breathe: all water-vapor.
Jupiter-star and it's moons have passed.
DANIEL
(thinks aloud)
There was, something curiously sci-fish about that man and wife who rescued us in the desert …!- But I still think there should be obvious expressions of intelligence in the cosmos too … Quasar-engineering ….
INT. COMMAND - NEPTUNE SPACE - (HALFDAY MORE)
(00:00 - Miracles/Cartouche)
The star-background still steady; Diana props on Daniel's shoulder deep-slouched; Gwen watches her displays; soffit displays repeat hers: a RAPIDLY EXPANDING GRID emanating from a small sphere ahead, lines alternating high-low binary-coded; Strange-NEPTUNE and Triton, minuscule, majuscule, minuscule, 5 sec;
DANIEL
There must-be some practical ways to extract significant quantities of deuterium, from Neptune.
Neptune and moon have passed.
PETER
What's our E-T-A?
GWEN
25-hundred hesits,- and no apparent presence: No ordinary planet.
DANIEL
(ponders)
Just a point in space … What point?
GWEN
(reports)
Point-98 light-speed by standard pulsars;- acceleration, constant.
PETER
Must be super-massive, exceedingly small: It flipped us off the solar plane last time.
DANIEL
Diana,-- Are there other known planets out here?
DIANA
What's known is known: What do you mean, other?!
DANIEL
Something unusual: in the planetary sense:
(doubts)
A cold neutron star? Quark star?
DIANA
Nothing identifiable beyond Neptune.
DANIEL
No Pluto!?
DIANA
The vagrant moon!?- I mean, no big system-planets, beyond Neptune;-- There are asteroid objects, galore.
DANIEL
And Pluto doesn't belong to another planet!?
DIANA
No,-- not any more.
GWEN
(reports)
Course is locked-in: No aborts, no options: We're in the dive.
DANIEL
That leaves us no better informed than on our Earth:
(more with Diana)
No unaccounted-for planetary orbit accelerations!?
(no response: checks Diana)
No magnetic anomalies!?
(checks)
No inexplicable gamma-rays bursts!?
(checks)
No spurious 7-megavolt neutrino events!?
(checks)
No sunspot-conspiracy theories!?
(grins)
DIANA
(guffaws)
Daniel!- Sci-fi movies are full of those things!
DANIEL
(mulls)
No better than our own Earth.
EXT. GALAXY SHIP ZOOMS AHEAD, TO TINY
INT. COMMAND - (1.5 HOURS LATER)
The grids are filled ALTERNATING PINK AND WHITE, indicating zone-approach, a hyperbolic passing course and continuously recalculating variances;
GWEN
Secondary zone; Point-99 light-speed; E-T-A: 70 hesits.
DISPLAYS BLINK-alternate red, yellow: SURFEIT/ORDINATEUR,…
GWEN
(exasperates)
No!
(a beat)
Course, Locked-out!
PETER
(authoritative)
Gwen, What's the trouble?!
GWEN
(feel-searches keys)
The controls are locked out: They don't respond to touch: Like Helm computer's overloaded.
DANIEL
(scans)
Processor-core-sector, down!?
(keys his own display)
What's the over-load? Mine won't shut-off! It just looks normal!
(yields)
A starship shouldn't balk at a simple hyper-jump!
PETER
The hyper-point, mass, is different in this solar system: size,- spin,- charge.…
DANIEL
Maybe we,'ve got loose freight-mass onboard throwing reaction variances into the trajectory calculations: A couple whales sloshing in a tank of seawater …
(grins to Gwen)
Saw that in a sci-fi movie once.
PETER
Won't make enough difference with our tonnage: Our whole ship has to enter the corridor.… No: Something with the hyper-point mass: It's moving non-computably,- non-ballistically.
DIANA
A moon orbiting your hyper-point won't change its center-of-gravity.
DANIEL
(reminds Diana)
We need deflect precisely off the hyper-point center itself.
PETER
(considers)
A moon at orbit-distance would be too slow: And computably ballistic.
DIANA
(advances)
But at our light-relativistic speed the "headlight effect" projects its mass-gravity focus back toward us!
DANIEL
(counters)
But the stellar-aberration, effect, pushes its focal, point, further ahead: Static, and, dynamic.… Drat, the homework they don't give in Freshmen Space-Time Physics:- Third order differences could spill us!
PETER
(reveals)
An asteroid entering the mass-point event horizon! Orbit decays rapidly spiraling inward!- The Nav-computer should, calculate that from its remote-sample time-series analysis; unless …
(rethinks)
GWEN
(mulls)
This leaves us without a jump-point.
DIANA
How fast will the asteroid be swallowed-up?
DANIEL
Momentarily,- But we can't slow: We need full light-speed to enter the aether-slip-stream.
Spotty EYESIGHT-FLASHES, 2KHz BUZZ (VH-"C"): They flinch, wince, gasp, flail, (like a photo-op) 2 sec.
Ahead of them in space the Pluton HYPER-POINT BLOOMS briefly,-- and Nav POPS-UP a neutrino burst-analysis;
PETER
(excitedly)
What, is, that,- Gwen?!
GWEN
(elates)
My controls work again!- That, was a neutrino burst-event: We must be close to a supernova.
PETER
(surprised)
Of course!- An, asteroid, crushes into a small hole at neutron star density: Its own micro-supernova!
The grids become SOLID-FILLED RED …
GWEN
(reports)
Primary zone: Point-99 light-speed; E-T-A: 5 hesits …
GWEN (CONCURRENT)
(2.2 sec. pace)
… 4 … 3 … 2 hesits …
PETER
Diana:- This is going to be a quick redirection.
Diana in Daniel's arm-hold leans-braces on the console.
DIANA
(scrutinizes)
Gwen, Are we becoming photons, before we arrive?
DANIEL
(wiggles free fingers)
Just wavicle:
(grins, sing-song)
Good-Bye!
The SKY FLIPS to head into the galaxy;-- the GRID CLEARS; STARS ACCELERATE passing; the SKY ASIDE ABERRATES forward;
DANIEL
(to Diana)
Stellar aberration….
They check their coordinates … Nav plots on a galactic grid as speed ramps-up to 6.7 million;
GWEN
(scans her displays)
We are in.
DIANA
(worry relieved)
Thank God!-- I thought you angels might evaporate and abandon me.
DANIEL
(reassures her)
The designers knew what they were doing.…
(unto Gwen)
But where, are we, now?
GWEN
In the aether-slipstream, heading toward the galaxy center,-- well above the solar system plane, but at a much different angle.
(takes the view)
Light-speed no longer exists.
PETER
How fast are we going?
GWEN
(rechecks)
Astro-referenced distance skip-rate fluctuates up to 7-point-4 million times normal light-speed.
DIANA
Gwen,-- Did you make a mistake?
PETER
The mathematics will agree, Diana: We're not moving through the vacuum of space faster than the speed of light: This corridor of spatial aether is superconducting us: We're subspace tachyons; We used the hole's deep gravity to both accelerate and change direction at the anchor point.
DIANA
I mean, the galaxy center is slightly below our solar system.
GWEN
Correct, Diana: The corridor arches over the galaxy plane, and returns to target heading momentarily.
DANIEL
(proffers to Diana)
Pete was saying, The ultra density cosmic superstring superconducts us as super-photons; But our former mass-velocity, now pure momentum, restructures and displaces it momentarily.
DIANA
And if this superstring passes through a star or planet, Does that mess-up everything?
DANIEL
Superstrings tend to squirm around star masses, instead of orbit: kind of a large linear gyroscope effect… except around black holes, which is how they collect: Nothing touching, survives superconductive evaporation converting to harmless photons inside, the superstring.
DIANA
And how'd we survive entry?
DANIEL
We Lorentz-contracted at light-speed to some sort of photon system inside the corridor, now stretched-out over a thousand kilometers.
DIANA
(considers)
You're pulling my leg awfully far, Daniel:
(thinks)
PETER
(inserts)
E-T-A?
GWEN
E-T-A: 50 kilohesits:-- tomorrow: a day and a half.
DIANA
(accepts)
Sounds like a theory, Daniel;- You might be neglecting paradoxic time-dilation.
DANIEL
(quips)
And that's what makes us photons unsafe at any speed-of-light.
The galaxy arm of STARS FLASH-BY …

INT. COMMAND - NEAR GALAXY CORE - (NEXT DAY)
(00:00 - In A Dream/Rockell - original mix)
Stars denser, more passing rapidly; Diana now at Nav, wears her avant-garde black-white-gold-motif space-admiral formal suit; Daniel sit-leans with Diana;
Gwen's display shows a grid around a center circle, speed decreasing; ETA 2.300:
DANIEL
(to Diana)
Our galaxy's main-and-central gravity-black-hole: 4-million solar-masses: 4-million mile radius.
DIANA
(affects wistful)
And does it just fling us away,- across the cosmos?
(covers yawn)
When do we get to your angels' galaxy?
DANIEL
(to Peter)
It's so nice having undergraduates reminding one to think like a professor.
PETER
(star-gazing)
E-T-A?
GWEN
2-point-3 kilo-hesits.
DANIEL
(resumes to Diana)
This galaxy-ship is programmed to ease us into orbit at light-speed near the hole's event-horizon; And dock us at the metal ring city.
DIANA
(somber)
Without being shattered by cometary bombardment, when we exit this corridor?
DANIEL
Ahh, -we hope,- yuh;- This ship has some authority, but there's not too much out here.
PETER
Magnetic sweep clears an area near a large hole.
DIANA
What happens when a star falls in?- Does that wipe-out everything?
DANIEL
4-million suns; ten billion, years; is one every 3-thousand years.… And it shreds a star's outer layer in a stream of hydrogen and uses that to crack-the-whip on its core: like an infant flinging used chicken bones off a tray … dangerously windy-hot outside: when it happens.
(arm-comforts her; tact)
Cheer-up, Diana: In the infinite cosmos, there are infinitely many Harry's:- You can't spend your life, loving each one of them.
Diana breaks a grin,- a guffaw-chuckle,- and head-butts into his belly.
GWEN
(abrupt)
We're changing modes … something new: We're braking out here:- 2-point-9 million light-speed …
PETER
(objects)
This is too early,-- isn't it?
Diana perks.
GWEN
Yes:- 2-point-2 kilo-hesits early.
DANIEL
Maybe the corridor is thermally inflated, passing through a star.
DIANA
(sober)
Wouldn't we see the star? Or its photon flack?
DANIEL
Photons pass through each other: That's the reason we accelerated to light-speed first: We can detect a large-scale progress-rate;- And we can, see the stars on Nav display.
DIANA
(advances)
Maybe the corridor is losing its extensivity of simultaneity: If the corridor is in fast orbit around a black hole its perpendicular motion shortens our re-focal reach,- so we think we're slowing down ….
Daniel smirks.… Helm displays sideways progress left to a yellow zone within an expanding radiant grid of lines and passing stars amid fixed-stars background,- Gwen reviews;
PETER
Prepare for orbit insertion … but yellow isn't the right color.
GWEN
Rapidly slowing,- and we're moving-off to one side of the corridor: 1-hundred-70 thousand light-speed;
(pauses)
90 thous… 1-hundred-30 thousand: We've got pogo!
The star frame begins crossing leftward … rapidly around;--
DIANA
(excited scanning out)
Are we losing plenum synchronization, too?!
GWEN
The velocity gradient near the corridor wall is shy-compensated.
PETER
Is our corridor traversing a dense star cluster?- This looks different than a redirect;- Are we passing another starship…?
The yaw-spin ceases;-- The yellow left-zone flashes to become green-zone within the expanding radiant grid of lines and stars: Speed increasing: ETA 2.240;--
GWEN
Speed returning: 4-hundred-30 thousand light-speed …
(pauses)
7-50 … It must have been alien traffic:- We'd have stayed near the corridor-center to pass through a star. E-T-A: 2-point-1 kilohesits.
PETER
(easing)
Take us all the way in, Gwen.
GWEN
(reports)
2-point-3 million light-speed.
PETER
Remain ready for orbit insertion.
INT. COMMAND - (AN HOUR LATER)
Diana sit-leans with Peter, a personal moment--
DIANA
(leans close coy)
So tell me, Pete, what it's really like, for an angel fallen from heaven: and going back up?
PETER
(plays along)
Well, It's pretty much the same as living on Earth, less appreciated.
DIANA
Not so different, ehh.
(a beat)
You know, Peter: The real, Peter,- before you aliens arrived,- was totally infatuated with Gwen:- I mean he used to snivel-up to her toes!
PETER
(eye brows up)
Really?!
DIANA
Ummm!- Glued to her day and night: Couldn't tear himself away from her, without ripping his pants.
PETER
(breaks to grin)
Are you telling me the truth?
DIANA
(drops to plain)
Peter. When have I ever, lied to you,-- in my whole life?!
PETER
I only met you, 5 days ago.
DIANA
Exactly:- This could be a first.
PETER restrains smirk.
DIANA
(a beat)
Do you believe the physicists' claim that they have solved the equation of the universe, with one hand tied behind their back?
PETER
(reviews both hands)
Yeah... But they don't know which, hand.
DIANA
(a beat)
So you've known about that already.
PETER
(restrains smirk a beat)
Did Daniel tell you his favorite joke about God making matter with no intelligence, to give physicists an even chance?
DIANA
(overly sincere)
I always wondered that about God, how He could have made anything, without intelligence;- but, Daniel has a different version of it … So, Tell me, Pete: Is an even chance, zero chance, or two chances?- Zero and two both being even.
PETER
(marvels playing)
I'd suppose, Even is two chances,- with each side sharing its covalent odd chance.
ETA 0.100,-- speed 5-million, decreasing;
GWEN
(inserts)
Astro-skip-rate is decreasing again … 4 million … 3 million … 2 …
DIANA
I thought so:- You angels never learned to speak plain English.
(returns to Nav)
That's why religion is such a mess.
GWEN
3-hundred-70 thousand light-speed … 1-hundred-40 … 60 … 40 …
Displays show a flashing pink zone within an expanding radiant grid of lines; near stars slow rapidly, now amid a bright billion de-aberrated fixed-stars background;
GWEN

sub-thousands … 6-hundred … 3 … 2 …
(pauses)
sub-hundreds … 80 … 50 … 30 … 20 …

PETER
We're arriving.
Her display shows a red-centered expanding grid;
GWEN

And slows …
DANIEL
(erudites)
We're back: From there to eternity!
Closing to the side …
DANIEL
(a beat)
You'd think there'd be just two, last electrons, to put in place before we exit …
And a dock …
DANIEL
(grins, Frenchly)
Appease the resistahnce!
And slows closing-up to dock … and turns to it …
DIANA
(quietly to Daniel)
Re-volt-ing, Daniel….
Docking attachment completes automatically …
DANIEL
(quietly back)
Just making an, ohm, run…
DIANA
(quietly back)
Did your planet have a, watts, riot over their electric bill, charges?
Docked,- Gwen exits … but they get up more reluctantly;
DANIEL
(quietly back)
You mean, the, killer-watts, rate …
DIANA
(quietly back)
You're making an obvious induction.
DANIEL
(quietly back)
With some reluctance …
DIANA
(quietly back)
On that, Q, we'd better catch Gwen.

INT. RING CITY, INFINITE CORRIDOR - DYNAMIC OMNI-LIT

DIANA
(inside, admires hallway)
Astronomer science sure is tubular.
DANIEL
(a beat)
The shortest distance between any two points, adds up eventually.…
(a beat, to Gwen)
Did Harry say where he'd meet us?
DIANA
How do you number a hallway like this? It's like Building 2-A-Prime.
PETER
Worried you're late for paleo-spectrum genetics, in a corridor 25-million miles long?
DIANA
(exasperates)
The stuff of Calvinist nightmares!
DANIEL
(confides)
Look for the concessions-stand:- That's where we'll find Harry.
(sniffs)
Do I smell mustard,- and onions?
HARRY (30-35, med. tall sturdy male model, college-football-hero), Christian, Republican, nuclear chemistry professor, space-admiral suit white, 2-week beard, enters forward from a side-hall ahead, busy eating from a plate;--
DIANA
(lunges forward smiling)
Har-ry!
HARRY
(turns about to them)
Hey! All!- Hi, Gwen!
(sweeps her: a hug-spin)
How are you-all doing?!
(puzzles unto Gwen)
Gwen?
(reconsiders his catch)
Oh,- Diana, I presume:- Hello!
They approach, smiling in 2-week's-absent recognition--
DANIEL
(quips)
Doctor, Harry, I presume;-- So: Old gravity-black-holes smell like mustard-and-onions!?
(grins)
HARRY
(maintains Diana's hug)
This ring-city food-store also has something like ketchup and relish, Dan, but preserved better.
PETER
(quips)
Should be called, galax-up;-- Hi, Harry!
HARRY
And served on pasta and anti-pasta!
(grins to them)
Hi, Pete;- Gwen, for real:- So this is your little, sister!?
(increases hug-intensity)
Wish I'd met her, on Earth:-- She likes me … Can I keep her…?
(kisses her nose)
Harry minding Diana, handshakes with Peter.
DANIEL
(shirks, quieter)
Kitty cats and girl friends: They're all fickle: I think I just lost another:- Anti-pasta jokes aside, I've never been so stood-up,- since my bar mitzvah.
PETER
(curious)
You were stood-up at your bar mitzvah!?
DANIEL
(littles)
Rebbe wouldn't let my girlfriend attend my bar mitzvah party: She wasn't Jewish;- We broke-up ….
GWEN
We'll just have to find you a nice super-cosmosian woman, Dan.
HARRY
Must be lot's of choices up there, Dan: Infinitely many Jewish, too … You guys ready to go back up?
PETER
(looks about and to Gwen)
Gwen: Which way?
She leads them strolling … passed transparent observatory bulbs, doorways, through side-halls … Diana in Harry's arm:
PETER
(for all)
So, Tell us about your shuttle excursion into the abyss, Harry.
HARRY
Not much to tell: It just kept going deeper;-- no bottom.
DANIEL
Something, was down there:- Didn't you find anything at all?
HARRY
Shuttle-refueling stations, along the way,- until the last one seemed only partly finished.
PETER
The last one?- How far'd you go-in?
HARRY
Hard to tell: It's pitch black; the sky gets narrower, and bluer, until it looks like a lone star, above … and the bottom-star gets bright ….
DANIEL
You must have gone easily halfway!
HARRY
I was thinking I'd gone about 95-percent, on our, scale:- It got rather strenuous with the depth.
PETER
Strenuous?- Tidal draw?
HARRY
(irked)
Ah,-- yuh: Tidal.
DANIEL
What's that like?!
HARRY
Well:-- It kind-of racks you apart, when you stand; better to lie-down; and the ship creaks noisily,-- and rolls and pitches defiantly.
DANIEL
What made you turn back?- You were so hep on going-in … Just too much rack eventually?
HARRY
Too much rack;-- yeah: It's really dis-tracting.
PETER
(quiet-firmer)
Why did you go-in, Harry?
HARRY
Game-training, Pete: You run for the light at the tunnel's end, when you're already inside the Roche-threshold. It's actually a kind of controlled-psychosis,- used in success-therapy,- which is why I'd taken extracurricular football in high school:- I'd been a …
(admits)
cry-baby, in elementary school.
DIANA
Did you reach your goal?
HARRY
I think so:-- It got so intense, I felt exhilarated, -heady,- and that told me it was time to call it, quits …. That, and I was worrying I'd run-out of refueling stations;- Not sure which is worse: the worry of gravity, or the gravity of worry: Both get you down.
PETER
(switches)
Sounds like a dream-trip, Harry,-- The memory's yours. Let's take the "up-elevator" and blow this cosmos:
(steps ahead with Gwen)
Even if we don't remember what got us down here, we can't go back to the time we came in.… Did you meet any aliens while you were waiting?
HARRY
I avoided most of them; --awfully rowdy:-- You remember those blaster marks on the walls, when we came down, 2 weeks ago …
(a beat)
And, there was a crew that shipped out three hours ago:- Did you pass them in the slipstream?
GWEN
Our ship slowed briefly in the corridor, along a wall.
AN INNER CORRIDOR
DIANA
(quietly to Harry)
And went into a silly spin.
(head onto his neck)
HARRY
And … Half an hour ago there were explosions:- The whole city shook.
(a beat)
Otherwise it was rather quiet here, overall … Found a computer library: It nets with the whole cosmos … And I walked into a reconstruction zone ten-miles ahead,-- such a blast: It takes your breath away:-- Some kind of aero-pressure gradient field, so slight, I felt I'd walked uphill a thousand yards …
(stilted phrases)
Then, I noticed the gaping tears in the floor and walls. Then I noticed the corridor continued so far away. Then I noticed the in-between city-ring-segment was missing.… Then, I turned, around,- and walked back … and thought very carefully, about what I'd just done: almost.…
PETER
Okay; okay.-- Go for the elevator.
(to Harry)
And Harry, Diana knows about meters and hesits already.
DIANA
That's okay, Peter:- We used to use miles and hours and minutes, too…
(quieter to Peter)
Two hundred years ago.
GWEN
(diverts to a door)
This may be ours.…
She tries the door's hand-plate … it fails …
GWEN
Still code-locked.
(keys control-panel)
DANIEL
(adapting from memory)
"7-1-8-3-4, add 13 days, is, 7-1-8-4-7; multiply overridable: Prevents arbitrary use; and saves program identities."
GWEN
(keys final)
Thank you, Daniel;- That was your code.
The sliding DOOR YIELDS-- THE COSMIC ELEVATOR
DANIEL
You mean you had your own code lock, too!?- What-for?
They enter;
GWEN
Back-up code:- Never leave a cosmic elevator without one.
DANIEL
(to Peter, grows a grin)
A woman must have invented science: Whence the 6-millennium lock on it.
INT. COSMIC ELEVATOR, THE GALAXY CORE STARS - (CONTINUOUS)
A small spacious circular room with cushioned bench seating around the sides; surround-windows to the outside billion bright stars; control-PANEL LIGHTS TWINKLE on the wall;
The DOOR SLIDES CLOSED,--
Gwen touches the control-panel;--
GEARS WIND inside the door …
LOCKS CLACK;-- then silent.
DIANA
(realizes)
Not exactly the Top-of-the-Mark.
DANIEL
Not exactly a spaceship, neither.
PETER
(cheers)
Have a seat, all.
DIANA
(muses)
The angelic prep-talk.
They sit comfortably;- Diana tight with Harry;
Gwen touches the control-panel;-- the ROOM LIGHT DIMS …
GWEN
Show time, Diana.
AIR-LIKE INFLATION … filling-up the pitch spectrum …
DANIEL
Same time,-- same channel,-- same saga, continues.…
They wait moments … no new operation presents itself: The inflation-sound pitch rises forever (formant sliding) …
Gwen looks outside momentarily …
DIANA
Gwen, Are we moving, yet?
GWEN
Not exactly: Look outside.
(00:00 instrumental - Dimensions/Don Dorsey)
Outside, stars rain-down, bluish above, reddening below …
DIANA (REFL)
(peers down)
Good-bye, ring-city; Halo, heaven!
DANIEL (REFL)
(admits)
That's about the bottom line of it.
HARRY (REFL)
(peers down)
And receding at the speed-of-light.
Stray clusters of stars rain-down;
DIANA (REFL)
(reflects)
It has a beauty rarely seen in books: I wish I'd brought my vid-cam.
HARRY (REFL)
For whom would you replay it?
DIANA
(smiles, envisions)
Grand-children like to see where their family came-from, Harry.
Gwen smiles;-- Daniel turns back to the window, and gawks: Whole nova-SPARKLING GALAXIES rain-down, shrinking rapidly;
DANIEL (REFL)
(knowingly)
Oh-boy!-- These aren't just stars.
HARRY
(plays straight)
Dan … Some things take years,- even at the speed-of-light.
DANIEL (REFL)
(a beat)
We … are up to the galaxies.
All look out again: Galaxies, distant clusters of galaxies rain-down, bluing above and westward, and reddening below and eastward;- distant galaxies turn proportionally upto a half turn; all shrinking; They speak in their reflections:
DIANA (REFL)
(wistfully)
I wish Einstein could have been here, and seen what became of the cosmos.
DANIEL (REFL)
He probably did.
PETER
You want to explain that bit of wisdom, Dan?
DANIEL
It's a theory … but … There is good reason to believe, if reincarnation is possible, that certain people do return to Earth:- The meshiach, for example, is in Jewish tradition, to return after a thousand years maybe two,-- though no scholar has proven whether he'd be a millenarian, or a reborn man; But by some the prophet Daniel may have returned already as was written in Scripture:- to stand in his lot in the end-time: The lot means someone with Daniel's wisdom, intelligence, skill in mathematics, and science, appears on Earth in or near our time: And, Then the sealed meanings of Daniel's writings would be known.…
HARRY
But, Dan: A Christian Scientist, on the Internet, cracked the code of Daniel,- ratiocinating 3-and-a-half days as cycles of Venus, and the 2-thousand-44 years from Daniel's 170 B-C, as A-D 18-75; -and likewise by moons, and Venus to Christ Jesus in 4 B-C,- … Not, Einstein.
Galaxies sparser; the sky dims rapidly, top first;
DANIEL
I read that.… And Einstein fits his depiction of Daniel's intelligence, as to the relation of light, space, and time: by including the constant speed of light, and tensor calculus physics. But his exegesis explained a fiery furnace heated seven-times hotter, as intense, sun-like smoke-less, light and heat,-- but didn't discover that relation to our time: that that furnace should mean the perfect brilliance of the sun in a hydrogen nuclear fusion bomb:- That was Einstein's wisdom … as Daniel foretold: an obvious secret, until Einstein.
DIANA
(to Gwen)
Gwen,-- Why is the sky so blue on one side?- Are we falling over?
GWEN
(to Diana)
We're upright: The outer cosmos rotates.
Galaxies gone, outside darkens to blue-black;
DANIEL
(explains to Diana)
The early moment of our universe formation was a rev'ed-up turbulent superfluid graviton exceeding ten-to-the-89th electron-volts, and its own interior speed of light; And as that turbulence became mass-energy of a trillion galaxies, it shed its angular momentum, outward. We don't see it from Earth: Do your calculus on thermal motion within a rotating gravitational field:- Atoms moving forward in that frame are faster in the cosmic-aether-frame, and more buoyant, carrying momentum from the center; slower molecules sink. Same as in solar rotation and the galaxy core.
HARRY
And you think Einstein and the prophet Daniel are the same, one?
DANIEL
Possibly,- as a new-born babe, not a two-thousand-year old man.
HARRY
You think Einstein knew he was?
Outside is pale and whitening;
DANIEL
Rabbi Jesus didn't remember his own personal history, after crucifixion and a resurrection … But he praised the wisdom of the prophet Daniel … And your Christian Scientist could have praised Einstein more.
DIANA (REFL)
(eager-surprised)
The sky is turning white:- Are we there?
PETER (REFL)
We've only caught the leading edge of the big bang,- where the photon burst is still mixing.
(continues reasoning)
Dan, Do you suppose there's more to the story? Who are the three Hebrew boys? And the fourth, like the son of God?- Do you think anyone has ever survived a nuclear fireball, without being singed?
Above and around gradually reddens;
DANIEL
That would add to its fulfillment,- But we won't dote on the persons: just the prophecies,-- else the prophet would have named them.
HARRY
Maybe it refers to three astronauts in spacesuits, Pete:- Reflections, unsinged by intense sunlight.
DIANA
(to Harry)
Then: Who's fourth?
DANIEL
(inserts-quips)
Nope: Who's first.
HARRY
(counter quips)
I Don't Know.
HARRY+DANIEL
(punchline)
Third Base!
Smiles. Above deep-reddens very dark; below turns bluish,- shrinks-down,- then begins casting-up blue-shadows;
DIANA
(corn-challenges)
Daniel,- Do all your woman-friends have wrinkled noses?
(wrinkles nose at him)
PETER
(ponders)
Good, question:- It'd have to be some alien astronaut visitor to Earth, wearing her own spacesuit.
HARRY
But that'd require a hydrogen-bomb detonation in outer-space, -a fiery hot furnace,- to attract the alien.
DIANA
Maybe the aliens are already there, invisibly, and the hydrogen bomb's light exposes them.
HARRY
(switches topic)
Daniel … Last time we came up this elevator you shared an absentminded professor joke, -to pass time;- Did you forget to bring one, this time?
They watch Daniel; Around is very dark red; below (OS) is a brilliant blue shrunken smudge casting BLUISH SHADOWS UP faces and noses; Above begins to turn blue;
DANIEL
(reluctant)
Didn't forget;- It was of different tenor; and had me pondering on what mankind lives on Diana's planet.
PETER
(coaxing erudite)
Please, Share: that we may learn of the cultural differences in hominid society across the cosmos.
DANIEL
(a beat looking among)
The department chairwoman, told me of one occasion, the absentminded professor remembered his invitation and was attending a faculty dinner:
(composures a beat)
In a quiet moment when nobody is talking, everyone is busy eating, he, souffl้s, a brief, flatus.…
(a beat, listening)
Nobody questions it, but he must've realized what he'd done, because he suddenly looks up wide-eyed at the faculty sitting opposite.…
(a beat)
With room temperature and pressure rising, he adjusts his position on his chair, and turns to the left,- looking behind himself.…
(a beat)
Then he readjusts his position, to the right, and looks behind …. The faculty members on either side say nothing and keep eating; But, the three opposite, not fearing death, begin commenting, between chews …
They giggle at leisure. Around and above gradually turns purplish blue; the very dark red recedes below …
DANIEL
(a beat)
One, chewing, says, He is checking for collateral damage on passersby.
(2 beats)
The second, chewing, says, He is sampling the expansion coefficient for a non-ideal gas….
(3 beats)
The third, chewing, says, He is echo-locating,- to prove before the tenure review board, that he was two-and-a-half feet away.…
(2 beats)
By this time the absentminded professor has returned to his original position facing, and resumed eating.…
(a beat)
Moments pass … and leaning forward, in a voice just-audible to the room he asks, Where did they put the flusher handle on these seats?
They giggle politely.
DIANA (REFL)
(interjects to window)
Now it's turned blue;- Why was the sky so red?
PETER (REFL)
We're not only going up, we're getting bigger; And on the way up, the photons falling into our cosmos from outside, are still bigger, photons, -to us:- red, photons.
The whole SKY BLACKS-OUT; leaving the room panel-lighted;-- [Peter, Daniel, Gwen, permanently glow of bluish dots]
The elevator TING-TINGS; arrives; stops.--
DANIEL
(explains)
27-th floor!- Garden real-estate, cosmic Planck-ton, legal antimatter supplies,….
Eyes adjusting, They gather slowly to the door …
The control-PANEL TWINKLES;
DIANA
(premonition)
I can't believe we're really in heaven: This isn't far-enough away: mere days and dem'uhrs: It's like a Disney-mono-rail ride.
DANIEL
Getting outside our cosmic gravity-play-pen, is, about as far-away as you can get, in heaven: Thence it becomes immeasurably infinite in all directions: You never return;-- perhaps, can-never!
HARRY
Which brings us back to the big-question: Where-in, is the infinite outer-cosmos?
PETER
(simples)
In Mind.
HARRY
Then, is the outercosmic-Mind more? Infinitely greater beyond the cosmic-mind?
DANIEL
(inserts)
More-importantly still: If uranium-bombs reutilize the stored power of supernovae, will men ever reutilize the power of gravity-black-holes,- more than this cosmic-elevator?
(smiles unanswered)
The DOOR SLIDES OPEN to daylight …
DIANA
(restrained exclaims)
The Garden of Eden…!
EXT. LUSH GARDEN - ELEVATOR HUT - DAYGLOW (CONTINUOUS)
(00:00 instrumental - Heavenly Cities/2002)
Flowers, trees; -A BREEZE RUSTLES, BIRDS CHIRP;- the ground is golden-brown; the sky is clear warm violet mottled with many extra-bright stars, but no sun;
Daniel takes a little USA-57 stick-flag from his pocket survival pouch,- and plants it-- [8+8+8+9+8+8+8 stars]
DANIEL
(deep-breath)
Far-far east of Eden,--
(stoops, plants flag)
The very end of alien technology: as we've known it.
GWEN
(surprised)
Daniel?
HARRY
(surprised)
No belch้-grande for our cosmic arrival, this time, Dan?
DANIEL
(sincere)
This time I remembered to bring my American flag, to plant: I didn't come back again this far, to not, make a statement for God and Country!
DIANA
I think God is already here, Daniel.
HARRY
And now, so is his country …
(realizes to Diana)
Or more exactly, your country, Diana,- your planet.
(to Daniel)
Dan: Did you count the number of stars on your flag?
DANIEL
No … Why?
(restoops, counts stars)
DIANA
Does anyone tend this garden? It's all grown over.
HARRY
We think this place has been abandoned for a long time: It hasn't had much tending,-- nor harvesting: It doesn't appear to yield much increase.
DANIEL
(surprised)
What are the 7 extra States?!
DIANA
Which 7 are extra?
Daniel gestures into the flag;--
DIANA
Oh,-- You probably mean the Dual Union Canadian Transition DUCT-States!
DANIEL
(incredulous)
Canada joined the United States!?- Your world is, different, Diana.
HARRY
Not really, Dan: First government Articles of Confederation provided for Canada to join without even a ratification by the other States.
PETER
(concludes to Harry)
And that little difference may have deterred their Hitler from dreaming of quick world dominance.
GWEN
(gently reminds)
We should be finding our way out to the city, directly.
PETER
Agreed.
They stroll away from the elevator … to
THE TREES - EDGE OF THE CLEARING
Harry LOOKS BACK:-- the elevator is closed;
HARRY
(hushed confides to all)
I know, -and you know,- we are not coming back,-- but, Should we code the elevator lock from this side?
They look-back … And at each other … nodding yes …
GWEN
(nods)
I did, already.
DANIEL
What's the number?
(unanswered)
Gwen?
(self-answers)
We're, not, going back anytime soon.
Gwen smiles firm-no, and leads, passing golden fruits and berries, mango, bosc-pear, sweet-quince, trees, bushes;
Stops and plucks a ripe-looking fruit; takes a bite;-- and picks a second and more;
DIANA
(examines a tree)
Looks like good fruit,- but, Why is it so golden? Are we in your glow-zone, yet?
(unanswered)
GWEN
(returns, French)
Pret-a-mahnh-zhay.
(offers Daniel a fruit)
Our volunteer food-taste-tester?
Small colorful ANIMALS APPEAR quietly in the near bushes: rabbits, birds, cats, dogs, deer;
DANIEL
(accepts it, ponders)
That's something I didn't really think about: The food on Diana's planet tasted like varieties and recipes, as though I'd forgotten what home smelled-like after two weeks vacation.
(a beat)
Long-term, and disperse, genetic stability and linguistic constants … are interesting phenomena:- The grapes of ten thousand light-years, are still grapes …
(looking about)
Do we suppose generation is stable out here, in the infinite cosmos?
DIANA
(notices animals, stoops)
Look at these gentle garden hares … They're so daring.
(cradles-up a rabbit)
HARRY
(to Diana)
Very friendly, too;-- Dan-Dan named them last time: That one is George-Bernard:
(clever)
He be G-B, shaw-enough.
Diana smiles back.
DANIEL
(attends)
Come-on, guys: Fun is fun;- Cut it with the Dan-Dan.
(to Diana)
These are wild animals: Don't lick your fingers after handling them;- And wash your hands, and jacket.
DIANA
Daniel: They are harmless rabbits!
(walks-on)
DANIEL
(accepts)
One more to protect.…
They STROLL through the garden, picking, eating …
Harry picks 2 golden-hued quinces, in passing--
HARRY
Have a forbidden fruit, Diana:- a quince!
He holds one to her lips, and she bites into it;
HARRY
In the renaissance age they let these rot till sweet,- But this kind is, sweet, like fresh pear.
(eats the other one)
She babies a piece to the rabbit, and walks-on …
NEAR THE RIVER - (MINUTES LATER)
Nearing … they find all the animals getting sleepy;
HARRY
(two-handed air-ball)
...the kid says-- 'Suppose you have a massive sphere of just-under two-black-holes mass, at a Schwarzchild radius of one: If, the mass were at a point on the sphere, all-but-the-opposite point, would be inside its Schwarzchild radius:- But it's not: the mass is distributed so that the outer Schwarzchild radius is shy of two-radii, but the inner-sphere, is outside, its, Schwarzchild radius'.
(straight at Peter)
What, do you give a kid like that?- A, for thinking,-- E, for reality?
PETER
In otherwords: Most, of the mass of a collapsing neutron star is in its surface layer: which collapses to a bound sphere, not a singularity, of photons forever pushing to escape-- returning rarely as deep-background radiation ... Space and objects do-exist deep-inside a black-hole; And there may be an exit via the poles:
(half a beat)
Like Venus with a hot exterior, but cold, interior....
DANIEL
Give him an upside-down,-A-E: If he asks what it means, Tell him, 'For-All his work There-Exists a grade.'
Gwen giggles.
NOW AT THE RIVER:
DIANA
(cuddles sleepy rabbit)
It must be getting late for sis' rabbit.
HARRY
(looks at the sky)
Whoa;- Late indeed:-
(points)
The edge of night is upon the sky:- Shield your eyes;
(gets sunglasses)
And don't look up till it passes in an hour;--
(self-corrects to Diana)
A couple kilo-hesits.
They don chic gray+gold tropo-chromic sunglasses from their survival packs; and LOOK ABOUT THE SKY: Sky-east is a sharp black disk half risen, center unseen;
DANIEL
(searches the sky)
Two-tone black-and-blue sky … D้jเ vu: a soap-opera!
East SHADOW BREAKS A WHITE-FLASH on Harry's face:-- His SUNGLASSES TURN BLACK;
HARRY
(interrupts)
Yeow…!
(looks down, and to them)
It still hurts the eyes:- Don't look near the direction of the star-point.
Then FLASHES ON THEIRS:-- Their SUNGLASSES TURN BLACK.
DANIEL
(catches-up, looks-down)
Yow! Yup! That's it!- Brighter than a welder's arc! Head-down everyone: Watch your steps!
Heads down, they proceed …
PARALLELING THE RIVER
DIANA
The animals know when your bright star is coming: They must have learned.
DANIEL
Once burned, twice shy: Never stare at the sun,- nor a nova sun.
HARRY
(to Diana)
Animal-kind learns a daily schedule;-- Mankind minds its education hourly.
PETER
(searches sky opposite)
Still no clouds. We can proceed out here for the night cycle.
DANIEL
It's easier on the eyes when the star-point gets behind us: beyond its zenith.
(checks his watch)
PETER
Further upstream, as I recall, this river runs to the edge of the garden: if this is the same garden.
DANIEL
(remarks to his watch)
We're back on Super-cosmic Standard Time … or Super-cosmic Daylight Time … or, Super-cosmic Night-light Time,- or …
HARRY
(offers)
Or eterni-time?
PETER
Interesting invention, Harry:- When was time-zero, out here?!
DANIEL
Could be anything: This planet is one of infinitely many:- and infinitely many time-zeroes.
DIANA
(admires her new watch)
Maybe these cosmic watches adjust automatically at each planet.
HARRY
(to Diana)
What would be time-zero on a spaceship communicating with another spaceship?
DIANA
(tries a watch function)
Maybe it has auto-differencing,-- time-relativity.
DANIEL
Then they must have synchronized their watches, sometime, back at relative-time-zero.
DIANA
Maybe they re-synchronize every time they contact each other:-
(to Harry)
A multi-re-prioritizing eterni-time: web.
HARRY
(to Diana)
Then the local cosmic space time webs must have co-re-synchronized when they first contacted other time webs: an inter-re-prioritizing eterni-time web, out to infinity.
DIANA
(brightens)
Like an application of the four-color-map theorem!
DANIEL
(mock worries)
Maybe there are time-web-hackers out here: stealing whole galaxies of time-synchronicity.
PETER
(smiles)
Ah-yuh.
RIVER BANK - STAR-POINT NOON, SEMI-SHADOWS (CONTINUOUS)
Sky-hole above; They walk upstream the golden-hue bank … The opposite bank opens eastward to golden-hue barren low-cut grass fields to a green horizon hint of city-top-line;
DIANA
(gesticulates to Harry)
I suppose there are no seasons here, nor polar ice caps, under an isotropically warm cosmic blue sky. But though most of the sky is blue because of Olbers' paradoxically infinitely dense cover of cosmic-star-points … Why is it black right under the black-hole's bright star?
HARRY
The atmosphere must be thinner on this planet: the sky not as blue-reflective …
(ponders to all)
But, The air does seem similarly breathable: as on both our Earths.
PETER
Might be the same partial-pressure of oxygen;- Or chemical composition significantly different:- Maybe that's why your quince is sweet.…
DANIEL
This close to the event horizon, the heavy-element-based molecules have greater abundance: including especially uranium and thorium.
HARRY
(reassures)
Depleted, uranium, Diana: Olber's neutrino-flux paradox, super-ages the radioisotopes:- We believe we are perfectly safe here.
DANIEL
(quips)
Just hasn't met the garden-serpent.
DIANA
Harry, Are all the stars out-here, cosmic-star-points?
HARRY
Not expectably:- In this infinite, cosmos are infinite possibilities, infinitely progressing,- including whole galaxies of ordinary stars,- somewhere: But in this local space we've seen a predominance of star-points … I'll show you tomorrow morning: In my pocket-scope the sky is shiny bubbly blue foam.
DIANA
And each cosmic-star-point is a whole universe inside its own gravity-black-hole cocoon?
PETER
That's a nicely poetic way to put it: A gravity-cocoon,-- and we're the cosmic butterflies.
DIANA
Then parallel universes do exist.…
HARRY
But unrelatedly at great distances: as mutually exclusive spheres.
DIANA
But do the people in one universe, know, what the people in another, universe, know?
GWEN
That depends de facto on whether we can statistically sample another universe … But if our universe is a kindergarten preparatory-school for living in this supercosmos, then ultimately, our grownups, remember, what kindergartners know in either!
PETER
But statistical evidence-taking could be dangerous if antimatter exists abundantly, out here: How can we safely tell whether we are sampling a compatible universe?- Antimatter black-holes are just as black!
DANIEL
(prepostulates)
Ante-statistics!?- We should have launched our baby-bottle surveyors into another uni-cosmic playpen, before coming out here!
DIANA
Our Father-Mother-God must think that is hilarious, Daniel;-- like landing men on Mars before building lunar space colonies.
DANIEL
(snobbily)
That seemed perfectly reasonable: We're more adept and at-home on planets; And besides, It's easier to bounce off stacked armchair cushions to get over the rail into the other guy's playpen.
They stand and look across:-- A golden yellow brick walkway leads from the opposite bank, across the fields and beyond.
HARRY
So, We're ready to explore:-- Which way do we go,- Doc's?
PETER
It's the same for a kilometer upstream.
DIANA
This must be Oz:-
(points across)
There's the golden brick road.
HARRY
It's not gold, Diana, but uranium yellow-cake.
Peter extracts his pocket Geiger-counter from his survival-pouch, and scans-about …
DANIEL
(explains to Diana)
The gravity-black-hole, Diana: We're orbiting the remnant of our pre-cosmic supernova:- Though we don't feel it, this place eons ago, was as radioactive as its million-electron-volt, ten billion degree core: The golden yellow color in the ground is a superabundance of uranium-oxide, thorium-oxide, lead-oxide, yellow-cake, mixed with red iron-oxides, left when the core of the giant super-star collapsed into the hole of our universe, exploding the rest in its nova … And outside the center it created the heaviest metals enough to form whole planets when combined with remnant oxygen, carbon, silicon,- and a chemistry that gives everything a golden hue.
PETER
(reading pocket-Geiger)
Dan, Diana,-- In any case, don't panic: The uranium-thorium count is so low, it may be all degenerated.
HARRY
(surprised)
Then, Inhabitants on this planet could have discovered catalytic nuclear fusion, before, fission!
DANIEL
(grins)
And mathematics before arithmetic?
DIANA
(counter-grins at Daniel)
And women before men!
PETER
May-be-so …
(looks around at shadows)
Anyway, The shadows have shifted 50 grads, a day cycle about two hours: three and a third kilohesits.
DIANA
(to Peter)
Call them, demurs, Peter:-- three demi-hour dem-urs: They're metric.
HARRY
(handshade-scans horizon)
Sure would be nice to hike across to that city later, when the day is cooler.
GWEN
We'd best start now: It doesn't get any cooler. And it could be a days-long hike to a mirage.
They strip to swimsuits, sunglasses; Gwen, Diana, DEXPORT bikini swimsuit-bottoms (black-trim-gold stripe front-right from side ring through the crotch to left ring, chartreuse insignia italic "DEX" to contra "port" on white) …
Stuff their clothes in large sealed plastic bags … and
Wade into the river … swim-walking across at leisure …
DIANA
I wish we could have brought a land-glider with us.
PETER
(missed that)
Where'd you see a land-glider?
DIANA
Just presuming.
(--:-- music zooms)
DANIEL
The land-gliders weren't small enough to fit in the elevator.
PETER
You've seen them, too, Dan?
HARRY
Too bad they didn't leave one here, outside the elevator: Can't be that expensive.
Peter looks at Gwen smiling, and yields on this discussion.
DANIEL
They probably do, on Tuesdays, and Threes-days.
GWEN
And which day of the cosmic week is today, Daniel?
DANIEL
Out here, who knows?- But it's not Tuesday nor Threes-day.
HARRY
That leaves Ones-days, Fours-days, Fives-day,- and the cosmic weekend.
PETER
(reconnects)
Super-cosmic weak-end:- Sounds like a super-cos-moxy-moron, Harry.
FAR SIDE RIVER BANK, GOLDEN WALKWAY - (MINUTES LATER)
Their shadows long before them; They finish redressing;
(00:00 instrumental - OceanSky/2002)
DIANA
Refreshing; Can we return some day?
HARRY
(gestures to the horizon)
The infinite cosmos is before us:- Who knows what opportunities we'd miss, there, if we come back?
DIANA
(smally)
Infinitely many …?
They walk, onward, following the golden-brick road.…
HARRY
(looks-back)
At least there's no flaming sword, guarding the garden this time, Dan.
PETER
That was an earthquake out-gassing in flames, Harry: This time, we're going the other way: Our new home.
DANIEL
(prompts)
Let's "long-leg" this,- Shall we?-
(long-strides ahead)
Come-on:- Let's "clock-run" this course:- We can cover much more distance,- much faster.
HARRY
Running is less efficient in the long-run, Dan.
DANIEL
(walking faced back)
Not, running,- Clock-running: Long-leg'ing is much more efficient, in these boot-heels with ample cushion spring, in this lighter gravity.
He stops and does a straight-leg test-bounce …
DIANA
What's "long-legging," Daniel?
They catch up, And he demonstrates:
DANIEL
(leg technique)
Pend-ambulating,-- like a grandfather-clock:
(cocks a leg way back)
Your leg is much of your body weight;-
(swings forward-through)
Just swing each leg full-forward,
(a one-leg high-hop)
And let yourself fly like a leaper: The Olympic triple-jumpers use the technique for three hops: It's very efficient, once you get the swing of it:- Unlike running, where you lift your knees through, Almost no energy is expended but to overcome inefficiencies in muscle tension as you swing your whole leg through.… Come-on: Let's do it: Start running fast, Then stretch out your stride, and leap onward:- Follow me!
(leads to run)
They follow him trotting … running … pulling faster … And stretching to long-legging, leap-running onward …
EXT. HALFWAY TO THE CITY - SUPERCOSMOSIAN TEAM SURVEY SITE
RECTO-BINOCULARS ZOOM-IN on shimmery distant 5 leap-runners coming; Object target numbers, range, angle rate, velocity;
SUPER#1 (POV)
Homman … Pfiven … Holees.
SUPER#2 (OS:LEFT)
Unscheduled.
SUPER#1 (POV)
Alien.
TRANSITION BACK OUT … the leap-runners very distant …
POV passes left between two caped SUPERCOSMOSIANS:--
SUPER#1 (OS:RIGHT)
(right)
Looke.
TRANSITION IN; ZOOM less-shimmery nearer; numbers reappear;
SUPER#2 (POV)
Fast … Specimens: Goodt … Femmal, Dtwe … Hommal, Dtrey.
SUPER#1 (OS:RIGHT)
Collect!
(returns behind)
TRANSITION BACK OUT … the leap-runners yet distant …
SUPER#2 (POV)
(agitated)
Tout-alle?!
(whistles)
They load their survey equipments … board and glide away …
Hovering the yellow brick path … toward the runners …
FADE TO:
EXT. GOLDEN PATH - NEARING A CITY DOME
Sky-hole and star-point above the city, bright semi-shadows chase their glider breezing over the yellow-brick walkway … Daniel, Peter, Gwen, Harry, Diana, ride packed around; All wear black-gold sungoggles; Supercosmosians respond dryly:
SUPER#1
(dryly)
This planet is well beyond star-tide dissociation,- And your cosmos is a minimal gravity-mass-hole: -an asteroidal, speck;- The observatory can telescope it.
HARRY
It is our, cosmos:- We won't forget that too quickly.
SUPER#2
(dryly)
Not much, among thousands locally; They're pretty-much all the same,- that I've visited;- except for this monster.
(points up)
DANIEL
We'd guess a nearby star forming in a dust cloud.… A gravity black-hole that big would be trillions of star masses, millions of light-hesits away, and its star-point dimmer by ten orders.
SUPER#1
Actually it is, a gravity mass-hole about a trillion star masses,- and, about one event-radius away …. But we don't know why it's point is so brilliant: We think it's something to do with its structure.
DIANA
This is incredible!- You've had the infinite universe, infinite years:- And you still don't know it all…?
SUPER#2
Someone somewhere may know, but not within a hundred billion intervals; And at best aether superconduction speed this local stellar space will be significantly different by time they answer:- The question would be moot and untestable: They might not know more than we do.… This differs from knowable phenomena: It is, or has been, unfathomable.
DIANA
Didn't your people build our cosmic elevator?
SUPER#1
Yes, But this phenomenon disrupts natural aether crystallization: We can't go in, till our scientists find a way to dynamically connect aether thread fragments.
PETER
What more is it? How does it break the aether?- Cube-R-law tides can't disrupt at its event-horizon.
SUPER#2
Its first-order-horizon tidal draw is tenuous, and its stars not all ingested:- Hundreds of billions of mass-grave-holes inhabit just below the horizon, and churn the aether.
HARRY
What keeps mass-holes from being ingested?
SUPER#1
That's where praxi-theory ends:- Possibly its zero-point energy has maximum density: the gravity mass-holes then superconduct;- Possibly in-falling mass fusions behind the holes, reaccelerating the holes.…
GWEN
Is it a danger to the cosmoses in this local space?
SUPER#2
That is why, we, are here:- Your cosmos is spiraling-in at half the speed of light: It will enter that melee presently and we hope to have our telemetry in place … It should tell us much: We're setting up to keep a fix on this planet.
PETER
(more to themselves)
Can we escape this fate?!
SUPER#1
You mean, come with us when we leave:- You don't want to go home?
DANIEL
We tried that once but home was no longer there: The world we visited was very similar, -Diana's world,- But we were extremely out-of-place.
PETER
(appends)
… in a macrocosm of administrative trouble.
SUPER#2
(laughs)
Hah!- A cosmic constant!- With the density of pure ferro-neutronium!
SUPER#1
(dryly)
Never expect liberty without the nuance of Truth.
SUPER#2
You learn a lot of silly skills out here:- How to distinguish matter from antimatter …. The kiss of an antimatter woman is ferocious!-- Tried that just once.
SUPER#1
Annihilated his mustache and blew his socks off.
DANIEL
(grins a beat)
You couldn't count her as your anti-better-half?
Diana glares at Daniel;
HARRY
(wincing, but)
How do you expect to retrieve your telemetry data when it sinks below the aether Roche-limit?
SUPER#2
Telemetry contact holds to halfway down: We've tested that by plumbing aether-slipstreams. From there, the data recorders will function until passing mass-grave holes steal the planet or graze or merge with your cosmos.
DANIEL
How will you retrieve the data recorders?
EXT./INT. A CITY DOME ENTRANCE PORTAL - (CONTINUOUS)
They arrive … and glide through a ribbed corridor and sparkly-pink AIRGLOW air-lock, doffing sungoggles;
SUPER#1
We don't have-to: The data-team will find all the answers, and return here with the solutions.
DIANA
(irked)
That's suicidal!-- sending them down there!
SUPER#2
The data-team will resort to the cosmic elevator.
DIANA
But they'll be trapped down there forever: Time runs millions times faster down the mass-hole: It may be thousands of generations,- if, they return!
SUPER#1
No different than your generations.
PETER
But we five escaped. They may never escape:- There's no-one to rebuild the cosmic elevator.
SUPER#2
It can be done from inside: The tools are in place: Only this phenomenon-thing breaks-up the aether.
GWEN
Aliens at the ring-city are a hazard.
SUPER#1
That's a risk … We believe we can handle them.
GWEN
(surprised)
Are you, the data-team?!
SUPER#2
Surveying team: We're setting-up the star-tracking responders.
GWEN
(a beat)
Do the aliens ever come up here to the garden?
SUPER#1
None that we've seen, since it was built.… We have information on what motivates them;- You five are exceptional: You might survive.
And glide into the city proper …
INT. SEMI-TRANSPARENT DOME - UNIFORM DAY-LIT (CONTINUOUS)
A multi-terraced department-store-like terrarium-garden; the sky-hole and star-point faint above. The glider stops.
SUPER#2
You will meet the City Council presently.
DANIEL
Why to you need a dome over this city?- The sky is constant balmy warm; Does it rain some days?
SUPER#1
We get dew, contemporarily, But occasional supernovae wreak havoc.… This city is the top node for the eventual data-team and must survive hole-entry,- whence many, domes. It is self-sufficient; atmosphere too.
HARRY
(unto Daniel)
Notice that a dome-day, is a pun on, doom-day.
DANIEL
(grins, but)
What keeps this planet rotating,- not tide-locked to our mass-hole?
SUPER#2
It was recently formed by planetary shard engineering; Its core density is near that of lead.
3 cape-enrobed City COUNSELORS approach; and 2 enrobed women PROFESSORS coming, yet farther;
PETER
(quieter)
Do you, all, speak our language?
SUPER#1
Yes,- of course!- As civilizations near perfection, they all speak the language more fully and effectually and efficiently: Not age nor height nor weight, but sin and sickness … give rise to misunderstandings, and conversely … Thoughts, exist in a balance of best-wisdom.
DIANA
(restrained)
You mean, our own cosmic space aliens speak our language, too?
SUPER#2
Yes, as they near perfection: There is but one kind of man individuated fully, with categories, diversities and taxonomies: But one Tongue, one Phoneme Linguistic or Language with its plethora of words unconfusable: There is but one, Intelligence!
HARRY
(hushed)
And infinitely greater than our little cosmic hole!
DIANA
Do animals have tongues and voices?
SUPER#1
(puzzles to #2)
Animals?
SUPER#2
(dryly to #1)
Exoharmonic intelligents: Animates: Standard normal tail distributions.
SUPER#1
(nods a beat)
More ecovolution; less information.
SUPER#2
(dryly to them)
There are no animals beyond a hole. New holees sometimes bring them as pets: They don't travel the cosmos. There are samples in the garden.
DIANA
We, petted, those.
DANIEL
(hushed sincere)
By sin, you mean, hatred, vanity, envy, murder …
SUPER#1
(dryly)
And laziness, pollutions, politics, confusions with animality,…. And equally interesting, Daniel: The words for all woes are equally well-known but they exist perfectly antonymously:- You can invent any word-of-woe, by simple negation.
GWEN
(hushed)
Let's remember about getting Daniel a wo-man.
Giggling, they DISMOUNT except the drivers; the Counselors arrive with heroic smiles and outstretched arms--
COUNSELOR#1
(smiles, near enough)
Well-Come, dear friends …!
COUNSELOR#2
(heroic smiles)
Yes,-- welcome holers: Permit us to extend our cordial hospitalities!
PETER ET AL
(smile, variously)
Thank you / very much / kind hosts / sirs / madam.
COUNSELOR#3
(heroic smiles)
To whom do we address ourselves?- This is the first time ever we have had guests from this hole.
PETER
(bravely introduces)
I'm Peter.
(points each)
This is Gwen, Harry, Diana, and Daniel: We're from planet, Earth,-- galaxy, M-zero.
COUNSELOR#1
Yes, of course, from planet, Earth: We all are.
Astounding Them.
COUNSELOR#2
(smiles; explains)
Very few individuals have ever been born wholly outside an inner cosmos … Dismal failures: People must live in one first, --a baby's playpen;-- What God hath here prepared for us, Let no man change.
DANIEL
What happened to them? Aren't there infinitely many?
COUNSELOR#3
Interesting question, Daniel:- No:- It did not happen by chance.
HARRY
But how could you be sure,-- until you know infinity?!
COUNSELOR#1
We do, know infinity, Harry,-- else we'd cease to have ever existed …. But technologies are more limited,- even at aether superspeed.
COUNSELOR#2
Look at yourself, Harry:- You don't examine your hands to know them, though you have numerous tasks to do, you do them,- and thereby you know, them, -by unfoldment of Principle, -if you see the meaning.
DIANA
Are those finite cases some kind of messiahs?- How many principals, are there?
COUNSELOR#3
Originally just one, Diana,-- But presently there are three.
DANIEL
How long have they been around?
SUPER#1
Long before we came out of our own holes, Daniel.
COUNSELOR#1
Since time never-began, Daniel, -so to speak:- There is no beginning of time: Time just flows: like a river passing a mudbank you can stand-on.
PETER
I'm not following:- We're expecting an infinite cosmos has infinitely many possibilities and occurrences.
COUNSELOR#2
It does indeed, Peter,- but the universe is just one: one Principle and infinitely many repetitions in ideas. Even as you were born in an inner cosmos, so one was born in this outer cosmos.
PETER
But trillions many were born in our cosmos.
COUNSELOR#3
That is perhap beyond your ken, presently, Peter: Your inner cosmos is finite, The outer is infinite.
(a beat, clearer)
Perhap it is likenable to black-body radiation, which quantizes according to the enclosing space: There is no finite quantization in the infinite space …. Or perhap it is like tunneling between cosmoses: This may be why you five are so surprising to us: You may have begun in five different cosmoses:- with only your reflected presence in trillions of others.
GWEN
Does an infinite universe appear finite, to the One infinite Mind?
COUNSELOR#1
There is an appropriate metaphor, dear Gwen: There exists a finite covering on an infinite space.
HARRY
(unto Daniel)
Perhap there is infinite prophecy, in a finite book.
COUNSELOR#2
Excellent analogy, Harry: Perhap you would enjoy research at our zone university: It is a local part of our universality system.
COUNSELOR#3
Yes, And you can teach us a class of your science:- Teaching and publishing are the best way to think;-- And we all enjoy a good story every now and then.
PETER
(bemused)
That would suit us -very settling;- But we really must learn more of your world, too.
COUNSELOR#1
But this is your, world, Peter: You must tell us all you know of us:- This is the only way we can know, you: We all already know the I AM ourselves:-- We all have but one Science, and one Mind.
DIANA
(worries)
May we have a little time to ourselves, please?
COUNSELOR#2
Yes, of course, Diana: But your teachers are coming: And you would meet them first.…
COUNSELOR#3
Come, Welcome them:- Here they are:
(turns-to)
Welcome, Professors Shammy, Tyenne.
PROFESSORS SHAMMY and TYENNE, straight sincere, arrive:
PROF. SHAMMY
(sincere)
Thank you;- You have five new students for us!
(admiring Them)
And, You are from the cosmos below?
PETER
(nods yes)
Yes, -Professor Shammy:- I'm Peter.
(extending a hand)
PROF. SHAMMY
(clasps his hand sincere)
Yes, --Peter,-- and, I am Shammy.
(smiles reassuringly)
DANIEL
(taken)
Daniel,-
(extends hand)
Professor … Shammy:
(a beat)
What is your, profession?
PROF. SHAMMY
(hands; smiles at Tyenne)
Well…, Absolute prophecy, of course … is the only true, Science, of the infinite cosmos: as I'm sure you've discerned coming-out here: We prove we know all.… Come: Let us show you the observatory: It is the sort of seeing you enjoy.
(leads)
They saunter to the mid-garden escalator;
PROF. TYENNE
(sincere; to Diana)
And, You are?
DIANA
I'm Diana, and,-
(points each)
This is my sister Gwen;- And Harry.
HARRY
(to Tyenne)
From what, hole, do you both hail?
PROF. TYENNE
Far from here, -and not the same;- But it no longer matters, Harry.
DIANA
What is this about one being born out here?- What came before?- And how are there now three?
PROF. TYENNE
Ahh,-- The one.
(a beat)
It is new to you now, but shortly you will have studied the result.
(beat)
Before…, We do not know by word of intelligible technologically:- We believe it was before the beginning of all word:- It required infinite unfoldment … marvelous, really … but it, is, just one.
DANIEL
Your words, your technology, then, are finite still: A complete finite cover on infinite unfoldment?
PROF. TYENNE
Exactly, Daniel; And now, The three are, because there is no double, standard:- but one triple-standard.
(a beat)
A simple mathematical case: Perfect symmetry of dual-four-dimensional time-space: When the one appears as two,- that makes three: The three appear as though they've always existed: conjoined in rhythm and reality; never missed.
PETER
Could it have anything to do with the monster hole?-- An open-face resonance around a central residue: localized to appear as three, but beyond, as one?- A fine-split?
PROF. SHAMMY
(smiles broadly)
That'll be your prophecy, Peter:-- You can begin … But of course, Make no mistake:- Absolute prophecy is infallible; And thereby we discern our oneness with the one all-Mind.
(points)
Here's the escalator.
INT. CITY - ESCALATOR - (CONTINUOUS)
(00:00 - Land Of Forever/2002)
They step onto the blue-fluidic escalator; Peter, Daniel, Shammy, walking up; Gwen, Harry, Diana, Tyenne, standing behind; but, all gliding together …
DIANA
Where is, the one?- In an infinite cosmos, What do you know about just one?
PROF. TYENNE
(concerned)
It's not an obvious extrapolation, Diana …. You see, We individually, personally, each know what one is. But our experience is from finite cosmoses, and retains that finite cover, -like clothes, by which we may also recognize each other.- The one born in this infinite cosmos … Well, Its original one-ness, is not gendered … However, Of the three, the other two are: one male, one female;- which is why we are certain there are three.
HARRY
(interjects)
You've met them?!
PROF. TYENNE
Yes, we've each met them, at times and places in our experiences … But the one and three have no specific residence: They appear not randomly but by infinite-nature, orderly, harmoniously, in our individual experiences: You'll meet them sometimes, --Everyone does,-- And then you'll know they are here.
HARRY
Then, we take it, When they appear, the occasion is always near a mass-hole: a local temporary fine-split?
PROF. TYENNE
Yes: That might be a good summary explanation, Harry.
DIANA
If the three include one, male, one female,- What makes them gendered?- What does their gender do for them?
PROF. TYENNE
As we mentioned, Their offspring do not survive well: We toss them into the nearest mass-hole, -playpen:- where they may best recover.
DIANA
(to Harry)
This is gruesome baby drivel.
HARRY
(subordinate-smiles)
Yes, dear.
PROF. TYENNE
The only apparently viable survivor is the one,-- who is very childlike as well: You'll understand more when you meet them: It is good for your comprehension, to meet them.
The 7 glide up, 3 walking, 4 standing immediately behind.
Daniel notices this bemusing fact, and tags Peter …
And stops to demonstrate … gliding just as fast …
All together they arrive at the escalator top … and enter …
INT. OBSERVATORY ROOM, GRAND DOORWAY - (CONTINUOUS)
Chairs, remote-viewing equipments, action 3-D supercosmos model (local mass-holes, the monster hole); A wall-window on the cityscape below, 2 gigantic aether-space luxury-supercosmoliners [a better UFO] on launch pads, of which one launches rising slowly, turns lumbering, and leaves;
They stroll-in … to the 3-D-video telescope …
PROF. TYENNE
(leads entering)
Our lesser amusements consist of watching life develop in the inner cosmoses, such as yours.
(to the video-telescope)
Let me show you, Daniel.
DANIEL
(nears)
Can you find our galaxy?
PROF. TYENNE
(actuates video)
Not in live-detail,- but processed view-records can;- though, You know your world no longer exists….
DANIEL
(peers-in)
We've surmised as much.
PETER
Are we the only people ever to escape?
PROF. TYENNE
Ultimately no, But perhap from your supercluster.
Leads-on to the supercosmos model, except Shammy, Daniel;
DIANA
(following with Harry)
Then this is final for us?
PROF. TYENNE
Yes, in your sense,- unless someone discovered your exit.
(indicates the model)
This is our local cosmic space.
3-D LOCAL-COSMIC DISPLAY: They slow and examine around.
DANIEL
Shammy, A question:- A theory about the mega-hole:- When mass-holes and antimatter mass-holes meet, --their inner cosmoses mix and mutually annihilate:-- The central result should be a brilliant, white-hole?
PROF. SHAMMY
Excellent theory, Daniel:-- You're ready for school.
DANIEL
Do you have a better theory for us?
PROF. SHAMMY
No;-- That is our best theory, too.
DANIEL
Then why do you, They,- say you do not understand it?
PROF. SHAMMY
The cosmos is a great work, Daniel: A theory is a work in progress. Would you like to work on this with Peter?- We can arrange for you to go with the data-team.
DANIEL
(interested)
Are you going in there?
PROF. SHAMMY
No, We're scheduled to move onward and elsewhere.
DANIEL
(looks at the others)
Then I think I should prefer to remain with you.
(humility; resumes video)
PROF. TYENNE
Excellent choice, Daniel.
HARRY
Tyenne, Is a white-hole unstable?- It should evaporate, as it can't form stable matter.
PETER
Q-C-P-T theory allows for a redominance, Harry,- eventually derived from its gamma-ray flux.
HARRY
(half to him)
A cosmic, tiddly-wonk?
PROF. TYENNE
Part of your theory, Harry, Peter:- Supermatter, or stable matter ….
Leads-on to the window, except Peter …
DIANA
(following, stresses)
There must be a lot of interesting theories here: Mass-holes colliding with mass-holes, head-on at the speed-of-light …
GWEN
(quickens)
May we spend a moment alone, before class?- We must discuss plans for our future progress here.
PROF. TYENNE
(polite)
We'll see you at your invitational feast, then. We launch tomorrow for the next nearest mass-hole:- We are gathering five-hundred students for the term.… One of the luxury-liners out there is ours: You'll board for your staterooms after dinner.
(exits)
PROF. SHAMMY
(exiting)
See you all shortly, at the feast: Don't tarry:-- You'll want to meet the other students.
The Professors leave Them standing watching their future …
GWEN
(contemplates at window)
Peter: Do you suppose they've bothered proving the traveling salesmen theorem for traveling from one mass-hole to the next, -with infinite time on their hands:- Does it matter?
PETER
(smiles to Gwen)
Efficacy is love in motion:-- I'd suppose they did, infinitely ago …
(moves to window)
Or something like it,- maximizing the efficiency of time utilization en route for teaching courses … on parameters we never imagine … time of day of arrival and departure.…
HARRY
(bemuses to window)
A Diophantine, optimization, to the salesman problem; a coding theorem!
(concedes to them)
More reason we had to learn in our finite cosmos;-- Without confidence gained, efficacy would dissipate in infinitely many diversions in frivolity.…
DIANA
Then, Education is not so much leading-out, as, learning with the finite to manage the infinite outside.
Gwen smiles to Diana.
DIANA
(to Harry)
Is there a super-hole engulfing us: that contains this local realm, and the one out there? Maybe that's why they don't comprehend it?
HARRY
And, infinitely many super holes alike, outside ours,- and the space between them connected.… It'd take incredibly long time to find-out:- Unless a super-hole condenses rapidly, there'd be communications between adjacent super-realms:- Its own density makes this monster hole marvelous,- disrupting the natural aether crystallization. But at this further distance, I believe we are leaving it.
(hand to supercosmoliner)
PETER
In a larger, infinite context, Diana: Connectivity, not isolation, defines domain-realms: Like what'll happen when our Earth's Internet-web connects tens-of-millions of servers, instead of hundreds of thousands, Or I should say: What must have happened, when they, did.
HARRY
You think it became more fluid,-- with untraceable sub-process relay mirror-caches,- and only digital signatures to prove their original consistency?- Like accounting without a stop for reconciliation?
PETER
(a beat to Harry)
Suppose there were an ultra-monster mass-hole, swallowing, zillions, of mass-holes:-- so large, it's never noticed on finite-time navigational databases ….
HARRY
There would be infinitely many such ultra-monsters, in the infinite cosmos,-- and, arbitrarily larger.
PETER
Yes,- but understand my meaning: There would be two types of super, infinite, cosmos: the entire, and, the undiscoverably semi-closed:- like the ring-city at our galaxy center, easily escaped under power but aether-slipstream corridors might be restricted;- It'd seem to be merely an uncharted territory, under renovation, with nanoscopic attraction,- until inspected and surveyed: a shoreline of retentions but not-impassable: There might always be one last aether-thread leading-out, --however large that region may be: it's finite rotation relative to the one-truly-infinite.
HARRY
A curious notion: You might have to go around it to get into it through that one last thread.
(chuckles)
Sort of a super-cosmic yo-yo!
GWEN
Not unlike Brauer's Fixed-Thread conjecture in a 3-space continuous mapping:-- They need to solve the riddle of the monster hole, first.
Peter nods yes.
HARRY
(reconsiders)
But supercosmosians would have thought of that!
DIANA
But at maximum aether-slip speeds, they'd never know it all together,- unless they hypothesized it all first, and sent-out scouts in all directions, and waited for them all to return: to then conclude it all.
GWEN
To know the touch of infinite comprehension, you must impose infinite expectancy.
HARRY
So, A finite cover on the infinite, forever unfolds,- but can never be the only finite cover:-- There'd be infinitely many possible covers …
(chuckles)
And with infinitely many one-right-answers, -each unfolding,- there'd have to be a common finite language for communicating one-right-answers without introducing infinite flaws.
DIANA
The purpose for the infinite one,- or three.
Harry eyes-wide.
PETER
(sobers)
So,-- We've made some progress,-- And, we have further to go.…
Daniel looks-up from his remote telescopic video--
DANIEL
You know, --to think of it:--
(erects)
Of the trillions of galaxies;--
(strolls to window)
Of the trillions of trillions of stars; Of the billions of trillions of trillions, of people, in our own entire cosmos … Just the five of us have ever climbed-out of our cosmic mass-hole gravity well …. Like five fingers sticking-out of a grave.…
DIANA
(put-off)
Daniel,-- That's morbid.
HARRY
(smiles)
But it's an apt pun on grave and gravity, Dan.
PETER
Do you suppose sometime, somewhere, someone, in our inner cosmos, will conjecture this outer cosmos exists and make an optical lens for viewing it from inside?
HARRY
It'd be a concave lens, for cosmic gravity's naturally convex spheric lens: because photons spiral-in to a gravity-black hole.
DIANA
(unto Harry)
Wouldn't the light from this outer cosmos wrap around itself as it falls into the inner cosmos?
PETER
(smiles)
Indeed-- a crypto, graphic, engine.
DANIEL
But it's well-known that light from point sources is instantaneously coherent: They could use crypto interferometry, to unwrap photons.
(considers)
HARRY
(grins)
Cosmic Hanukkah Christmas presents.
DANIEL
(resumes)
But, What would they see?- Not this small planet …. One extraordinarily bright spot against a mottled sky otherwise no different than cosmic 3-degree background radiation … Might interest astronomers.
PETER
Outer-cosmic supernovae-events …
(rethinks)
Better still: With infinitely many black-holes in this outer, cosmos, performing as gravity-lenses, some of these stars might flicker over weeks,- just right for explaining unexplained fast-quasars, inside.
GWEN
Then, We may someday have company again:-- There's space enough.
DANIEL
(grins)
Yeah!- And old debts never die.
HARRY
(grins)
They just inflate away?
Diana looks surprised, musingly concerned for two, Harry's.
